Need someone to throw a ball for an hour? Tessa's in. Planning a lazy Sunday on the couch? She'll happily claim the spot right beside you. Working in the yard, making dinner, or relaxing on the patio? She'd love to come too. She isn't picky about the activity. She just likes being included, and honestly, we think that's one of the best things about her. Her foster says Tessa is her little shadow in the very best way, and one of her favorite things about her is what an incredible cuddle bug she is.

Tessa May is believed to be approximately 1 year old and currently weighs about 55 pounds. As with any rescue dog, her exact breed is always a mystery, but our best guess is she's a Black Lab mix. Whatever else makes up her DNA gave her a gorgeous sleek black coat, a heart of gold, and the kind of personality that makes people fall in love almost instantly.
One of our favorite things about Tessa is how wonderfully adaptable she is. She has plenty of energy when it's time to play, but she also knows exactly when it's time to relax. She'll happily spend the afternoon chasing a tennis ball, playing tug-of-war, or stretching her legs outside, and then before you know it, she's curled up beside you on the couch like she's been there all along. She has just enough energy to keep life fun without feeling like she's constantly on the go.
People are definitely Tessa's favorite. She's incredibly friendly, loves meeting new people, and genuinely enjoys being part of whatever's happening around the house. If you're folding laundry, she'll be nearby. If you're making dinner, she'll likely stop by to supervise. If you're outside enjoying the evening on the patio, she'll happily keep you company. She simply loves being included, and it's one of those little things that makes living with her feel so special. She's also been around children ages 8 and 10 and did wonderfully with them. Between her affectionate personality, gentle nature, and love of being around people, we think she has all the makings of an amazing family dog.
Tessa is currently fostered with two other large dogs, one male and one female, and fits in beautifully with both of them. They share toys without issue, enjoy playing tug-of-war together, and mix in plenty of playtime with relaxing around the house. Her play style is sweet and gentle, and she does a great job matching the energy of the dogs she's spends time with. When meeting new dogs, Tessa simply appreciates a little personal space at first. If another dog immediately gets right up in her face and won't take a hint, she'll politely let them know she'd like a little room with a quiet lip lift or soft growl. Honestly... it's a pretty reasonable way to ask for some boundaries. Once she's had a chance to settle in and get to know another dog, she's friendly, playful, and easy to live with.
Tessa also met our house cat Biggie and met him appropriately and was very respectful around him. She did not chase Biggie, nor was she bothered by Biggie jumping or doing what cats do. Biggie also felt comfortable around her as well. We do not know if she has ever lived in a home before with a cat and this was our first time seeing her with a cat. If you have a cat in the home, we can arrange for her to have a sleepover with a cat upon request. Just let us know!
Tessa is fully potty trained, knows how to use a doggy door, and has wonderful house manners. Her foster also trusts her to free roam the house while she's away because Tessa has proven herself to be very respectful in the home. The only thing we'd recommend is not leaving your sandwich unattended on the counter. She is a Lab mix after all, and if there's people food within reach, that talented Lab nose will probably find it before you do. Toys are one of Tessa's favorite things, especially if they involve a game of fetch or tug-of-war. She's also very treat motivated, already knows how to sit, takes treats with an incredibly gentle mouth, and is eager to please. She's the kind of dog that truly enjoys learning and would love continuing to practice new tricks with her future family.
The one thing Tessa would happily skip is spending time in a crate. She'd much rather be out with her people, and she's been known to sing a little song when she's kenneled. Because of that, we think she'd do best in a home where she can safely free roam when her family is away, just like she does in foster care. We'd love to see her with a backyard where she can play fetch, explore, stretch her legs, and enjoy hanging out outside with her people, but we also think she has the potential to do well in an apartment or condo as long as she gets regular exercise and isn't expected to spend her days in a kennel.
If you're looking for a dog that's equal parts adventure buddy, fetch partner, patio companion, and professional couch cuddler, Tessa May checks all the boxes. She's friendly, affectionate, wonderful with people, great with other dogs, and has the kind of easygoing personality that makes it feel like she's always been part of the family. We facilitate adoptions nationwide using our rescue run USDA certified transport system, ensuring every pet travels safely and comfortably with 24/7 care. Our transport includes drop off locations, in WA, UT, OR, ID, VA, PA, OH, NY, CT, VT, TN, KY, WI, MN, IL, WI and Canada (pick up in Bellingham, WA, Buffalo, NY or Brattleboro, VT for for Canadian adopters). Before the adoption is finalized, you will meet your pet through a video call, creating a fun and personalized experience!
The adoption fee is $1200 and includes all vetting (DAPP with booster, Bordetella, Rabies vaccine, multiple broad spectrum deworming treatments, spay/neuter, flea prevention, a 12 month heartworm preventative injectable, heartworm test and treatment if needed, a microchip with free lifetime registration, a high quality nylon Martingale collar, a health certificate deeming the pup healthy for travel, cost of transport*, and priceless years of love and loyal companionship!

At our 2 acre Texas based property, we assess every animal with trainers on staff, we modify behavior as needed, and create individualized behavior plans to help prepare dogs for their future families including crate training, potty training, leash walking, etc. Our fosters are able to attend group training and socialization play groups helping them stay confident, well rounded, and adoption-ready. Our on-site trainers are dedicated to each dogs growth and we enjoy seeing their progress!
