Izzy is a diamond of a Malinois. At 11 mo old, 45 pounds, she has a gentle disposition without the nonstop intensity you might expect from the breed. She isn’t mouthy and hasn’t shown aggression.
She can seem skittish when meeting someone new, especially if they reach to pet her before she’s comfortable. She lacks confidence, but once she feels safe, her silly, goofy personality comes out.
Izzy is extremely food motivated. When there’s a food reward involved, she’ll tune out just about everything around her. She’s very trainable, and we highly recommend group training classes to help build her confidence.
She gets along with friendly dogs of all sizes and is playful and submissive with them. If a new dog gets in her face, she may air snap to ask for space—not to start a fight. She wants to chase cats to play, but can share a home with a calm, dog-savvy cat.
Izzy was surrendered by her owner emaciated and suffering from worms and giardia. She has since been treated and is clear of parasites. She’s housebroken and currently uses a dog door.
She needs a gentle, patient person who will guide her without pitying her or using harsh handling. She’s a wonderful dog who needs someone to keep building her confidence.
We’re looking for an active family with another friendly dog and a quiet home without lots of visitors. Secure fencing at least six feet tall is required—no chain link. She hasn’t shown escape behavior, but Malinois are athletic dogs, and her home needs to be prepared for that.
Malinois experience is preferred; German Shepherd experience is the minimum requirement.
