Meet Newt!

ABOUT THIS ANIMAL:

Newt has already traveled farther than most dogs can claim, this little Beagle mix made her way all the way from Mexico to FOHA, complete with her very own passport! Her journey is especially remarkable when you consider where it began.

Newt came from a hoarding situation where approximately 50 dogs were living together in a very small house. The dogs arrived in poor condition and had experienced intense competition for basic resources. Everyday parts of a dog's life, going for walks, wearing a leash, visiting the vet, and regularly meeting new people-were completely unfamiliar to them.

Before traveling to FOHA, Newt spent about four months in foster care in Mexico, where she had the opportunity to experience a very different kind of life. And this resilient girl has made some incredible progress.

Today, Newt is easy and confident on leash and doesn't tend to pull. One of her favorite activities at FOHA is wonderfully simple: finding a nice patch of grass, sitting down, and quietly watching the world go by.

Newt can be shy when meeting someone new, which makes perfect sense given how limited her early experiences with people were. Give her a little time to decide you're a friend, though, and you'll discover an entirely different side of her. Once Newt knows you, she is incredibly sweet and affectionate. She'll seek you out for pets, soak up attention, get extra snuggly, and may even celebrate with some excited zoomies!

Her foster described her as a "great all-around dog," and considering how much of the world was once unfamiliar to Newt, we're pretty impressed with just how far this little international traveler has come.

HOW AM I WITH DOGS:

I have lots of experience living with other dogs! Before coming to FOHA, I lived successfully in foster care with various dogs for approximately four months. I seem to prefer calmer, female dogs, but I'm still getting used to being here at FOHA.

Because I originally came from a situation where dozens of dogs had to compete for resources, thoughtful management around valuable things like food is still important. In foster care, meals were fed separately in crates.

HOW AM I WITH CATS:

I haven't been tested with cats yet. Just ask my friends at FOHA about a cat test!

HOW AM I WITH KIDS:

My previous foster felt that I could be a good match for older children. Since I can initially be shy with unfamiliar people, a family that understands giving me time and space to get comfortable would help me feel my best.

I KNOW THE FOLLOWING COMMANDS:

Considering I had essentially no leash or walking experience before entering foster care, I've learned quite a lot! I'm now comfortable going for walks, am easy to handle on leash, and generally don't pull.

I'm still discovering all the things that come with being a companion dog, and positive, patient training can help me continue building on everything I've already learned.

MY HOUSEBREAKING AND/OR CRATING:

I have experience eating and sleeping in a crate, and my foster did not observe me being destructive or having potty accidents in the house.

As with any dog transitioning into a new environment, I'll need some time to learn the routine in my new home.

Newt's world used to be incredibly small. Now she's crossed borders, gotten her own passport, learned to walk on leash, met new people, lived successfully in foster care, and traveled all the way to Virginia looking for a home.

She may not immediately climb into the lap of someone she's just met-and that's okay. Give Newt the chance to know you, and you'll get to meet the affectionate, attention-seeking, snuggly, zoomie-filled girl underneath that initial shyness.

Her passport already has its first big adventure documented. Now Newt is ready for the most important destination of all: home.

ADOPTION FEE INCLUDES:

Spay/neuter, vaccines (rabies, distemper & Bordetella), 1-month access to Petcademy for training and behavior support, slip lead leash, 1 bag starter food, 1 month flea/tick & heartworm preventatives, diagnostic testing, and additional medical procedures as recommended by our vet.
