Meet Hoji, a young Aussie boy that is slowly learning to trust his foster family. Once he knows you’re a friend, he will give you the soft puppy eyes that make your heart melt. He shows many physical and emotional traits typical of an Australian Shepherd. He is incredibly smart, very observant, and can be quite shy until he finds his bearings. He displays his humor with an endearing head tilt and occasional side eye for good measure.
Despite being a herding breed dog, Hoji has been entirely indifferent to other critters and has shown no mischievous tendencies. He has enjoyed watching other dogs play and is potentially looking forward to one day joining in, once his initial nerves subside. A confident, playful dog sibling might be just what he needs to help him feel more courageous.
While Hoji is shy in hectic or noisy environments, he is very watchful and calm and visibly appreciates his handler’s encouragement. He enjoys car rides and outings immensely and walks respectfully on leash. He doesn’t act frantic, and will accept all types of handling, but when people are up and moving, especially indoors or where he feels trapped, he definitely has a flight response.
When everyone has settled in at home, Hoji doesn’t mind curling up on the couch and observing his surroundings, and will eventually let his curiosity get the best of him, seeking out affection, hunting up a discarded toy, or bravely exploring the house. He will similarly express interest in treats with a relaxed environment.
We think he would do well in a quiet home with a single parent or couple who enjoy occasional hikes on forest trails, frolics through grassy fields, or combing deserted beaches where Hoji can enjoy the sunshine and some wind blowing in his hair. He’s hoping for someone who would appreciate some canine company while running errands or while tending to their yard and garden, someone who likes to be home more than not, and who doesn’t host large gatherings on the regular. Hoji does enjoy making friends with people but likes to do so on his terms, calmly and slowly, without pressure.
If you love the Aussie breed but don’t necessarily want to take agility classes or go for daily jogs to keep yours happy, this sweet, moderate energy fella may be the best pick for you. Winning him over and helping him reach his full potential will be deeply rewarding. We suspect he has never been a house dog, never been invited to share his master’s bed, no spent an evening snuggled in the couch next to his favorite person. We are so excited for him to fine his forever home where he can discover all of life’s delights.
Hoji is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, and has been cleared of concerns indicated by blood work.
