There are dogs who come into rescue needing a home, and then there are dogs like Eloise, dogs who make you wonder how they survived long enough to be rescued at all.
Eloise was found as part of a severe animal cruelty case, locked in a room and left to live in her own urine and feces. She had been starved to just 14 pounds; every bone and rib protruded from her body, and she was so weak she could barely take a few steps without falling over. Her teeth were so badly damaged and worn that several had to be removed, including all four canines.
And somehow, after everything human beings had done to her, Eloise still chose to love us.
She has the most soulful eyes I have ever seen. In them you can almost see her entire story, the sadness and fear she survived, but also hope. Hope that you are her person, that you will treasure her, keep her safe and finally be her home.
Eloise is the definition of a Velcro dog. She wants to be held, hugged or touching her person whenever possible and gives back every ounce of love she receives tenfold. She is wonderful with dogs big and small, great with children and not food aggressive. She would enjoy a playmate but could also be happy as an only dog because, more than anything, Eloise wants her person.
She is still learning that she is safe and that love isn’t something she has to compete for. She can be shy and insecure with new people and may hide behind someone she trusts. She sometimes pushes between another dog and her person for affection, not aggressively, but because she hasn’t yet learned there is enough love to go around.
Eloise needs someone who truly wants a Velcro dog and understands what it means to be the center of her world, someone willing to give her patience, consistency, love and grace as she continues to flourish.
She loves cozy blankets, sunbathing and stretching out in freshly cut grass. And when she sees her person, she gets so excited her whole little backside wiggles from side to side, earning her the nickname “Wiggle Butt.”
Eloise came frighteningly close to never having a tomorrow. Yet here she is, still gentle, still trusting, still loving and still hoping for her person.
