Dora is a 4-year-old spayed American Akita (~63 lbs) who is affectionate, loyal, and thrives with routine. She’s extremely well housebroken, kennel trained to a wire kennel, and does well with grooming—does amazing with nail trims and tolerates baths (though not a fan of dremeling). She loves brushing.
She adores kids and remains calm around noise and chaos, but should still be treated respectfully. With new people, she may be initially wary but bonds deeply once she feels safe and will settle down and fall asleep, even with guests over.
She loves training! She is both very toy and food motivated, and feeds off of praise like it’s her source of life. She needs more socialization and positive exposure, but she is a very trainable dog. She responds best to positive reinforcement and consistent guidance. She is eager to learn new tricks and commands, and while not always perfect, here are some of the foundation things she knows:
-Sit
-Down (with implied stay)
-Wait (for treat or toy) can also be used for things in general
-Pretty!
-Wave
-Spin (left direction)
-Stay
-Break (to release her from commands like down or stay)
-impulse control for doorways
-Stand
-Touch
-Paw (She is still learning this one)
-Up up (for putting her front two paws up on something). This has also helped her to grow confidence in going on a place mat.
-Come/here
-Leave it
- Stop (for walking, to help her stop with you)
-Kennel
-Go ahead (released to sniff and walk ahead on a leash)
-Here (heel on the right side) (She’s learning introduction to coming into the heel position and center position, but doesn’t know it yet)
-Fix your leash (she lifts her paws when she gets tangled up)
-She knows how to walk on a loose leash -Load up (get into the car)
-Target (touch something with her nose)
-Clicker training and "Yes" are her marker words for doing things right (Instantly gets her attention),
She should not interact with unfamiliar dogs, especially on leash, due to a history of dog aggression. She may bark at strangers but is not human-aggressive. She is muzzle trained for dog-related situations.
Dora enjoys walks and playtime but is generally low-energy and happy to relax with her person. She loves outdoor time, especially in a fenced yard.
She would do best in a structured home that respects her boundaries, maintains a routine, and continues her training and confidence-building.
She is available to foster-to-adopt, as we want her future adopter to learn with her to set her up for the best possible life!
