Just look at that face! Max is a handsome 4-year-old tabby with gorgeous green-gold eyes, bold markings, magnificent whiskers—and a story of resilience written all over him.
For most, if not all, of his life, Max lived outdoors. Life wasn’t easy. He had to find his own food, compete with other outdoor and feral cats, and he may not always have had positive experiences with people. When he was rescued, Max was found injured with what appeared to be a broken arrow or stick in his back. Today, his injury has healed, he has been neutered and vaccinated, he’s looking healthier—and he’s discovering that life indoors can be pretty good.In just 47 days with his foster, Max has made remarkable progress.
The frightened, anxious cat who first arrived is beginning to trust. He now accepts gentle pets and has discovered the joy of head, cheek and chin scratches. Once he feels safe with you, he’ll even come over asking for more.
And Max has plenty to say! He’s a wonderfully vocal boy who greets his caretakers with chatter, as though he’s asking, “Where have you been?” He enjoys being nearby and will follow you from room to room to keep up with the action. And as you can see from his photos, this former outdoor survivor is getting pretty good at lounging around and enjoying the comforts of indoor life.
Max is still learning one very important lesson: food will always be there.
After four years of never knowing when his next meal would come—or whether another cat might get to it first—Max can understandably become anxious at mealtime. Sometimes he’ll reach with his paw because his survival instincts still tell him, “Get the food while you can!”
His foster is patiently teaching him something completely new:
You don’t have to grab it, Good Boy. This meal is yours. No one is going to take it away.
And Max is learning. He’s already made great progress in a short amount of time and just needs consistency and patience as he leaves those old survival habits behind.
Max’s ideal adopter will be experienced with cats, patient and willing to let a relationship develop at his pace. He isn’t a cat who should be expected to walk into a new home and immediately behave as though he’s lived indoors his entire life. He’s spent four years learning how to survive, and only weeks learning how to trust.
But look how far he’s already come.
Behind those beautiful eyes is a Good Boy who is discovering that hands can bring scratches instead of fear, that a soft place is meant for sleeping, that meals arrive every day, and that humans can be friends.
Max survived the first four years of his life. Now we’d love to find the person who will give him the rest of his life to simply be a cat.
