Salem - Domestic Short Hair Cat for Adoption in York, Pennsylvania

WANTED: One very special adopter for a very special cat. Salem is a 7-year-old cat who came into the shelter with her littermate sisters when one of their senior owners passed away and the other was left unable to care for them. Salem struggled deeply with the transition to shelter life and was avoidant of us for her first couple months. Then, she started to enjoy some head scratches. Salem still has trouble with fast movement, but she's slowly opening her heart up again. But Salem will need a truly cat-savvy adopter that's willing to stand by her to nurture that trust by giving her all the space and time she needs and meeting her where she's at without taking it personally. Her prior family said she comes around to being pet and held on her terms, but she's never been a fan of strangers. You'll have to prove to Salem you're one of the safe ones. Salem lived with her feline mother and sisters in her previous home and was described as being tolerant of them. She apparently lived with dogs too and found them fine, though we anticipate quite the slow introduction process with her given the time it takes for her to become comfortable in a new place. Because Salem can become defensive around fast movements, we think she would be best suited for a home without young children or high activity levels. Families who are a purrfect fit for a cat like Salem are few and far between, but we know they're out there. Until then, we'll keep breaking down her walls for the day she meets them.
