Mabel didn't come into the world expecting much from people. She and her mother, Mavis, were two of many cats living in a house that had quietly, accidentally spiraled out of control — a well-meaning person who started with a few cats and ended up overwhelmed, unable to keep up with food, space, or vet care for the dozens who multiplied under their roof. By the time rescuers arrived, the cats were thin, skittish, and had only ever really trusted one creature in the world: each other.
Mavis kept Mabel close through all of it. Even after Mabel was fully grown, she stayed pressed against her mother's side, grooming her ears, sleeping curled into the curve of her back. Volunteers noticed it right away: wherever Mavis went, Mabel followed, and when they were separated even for a vet exam, both cats grew anxious and vocal until they were reunited. It became clear quickly that these two weren't just mother and daughter by blood. They were a team.
Mabel herself is sleek and black as midnight, with wide, watchful eyes that took weeks to soften from wariness into curiosity. She's the more cautious of the pair — she'll watch a new person from across the room before deciding they're worth a sniff — but with Mavis beside her, she relaxes. Mavis, calmer and more easygoing, seems to permit Mabel to feel safe. Caretakers describe them as a package deal, not out of obligation, but because separating them would mean asking Mabel to grieve the one constant shes had through every hard chapter of her life.
Now, healthy, vaccinated, and slowly learning that gentle hands mean good things, Mabel and Mavis are ready for a home that has room in it for both of them, a quiet space where Mabel can keep watching the world from behind her mother's shoulder until, one day, she decides to step out front on her own.
If you're looking for two cats who already know how to love each other, and who are ready to learn how to love a person too, Mabel and Mavis would very much like to meet you.
