Denny is a fabulous kitty looking for a forever home. Denny is FIV positive. If that sounds scary, we’re here to tell you it’s not! Read on for some fast facts including why it’s totally possible (and safe!) to adopt Denny even if you already have a kitty at home
Let’s start with the basics: FIV stands for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and is comparable to the human virus, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
FIV doesn’t typically present with any specific symptoms so you would likely not be able to tell a cat is infected without running an FIV specific blood test.
FIV compromises the immune system and therefore FIV+ cats can be more prone to infections. They may develop chronic upper respiratory infections or other associated conditions (dental disease, recurrent eye infections, etc). This can progressively weaken the immune system, making cats more likely to get illnesses as they age.
The good news is, FIV is not very contagious and FIV+ kitties can live safely in the same home as FIV negative kitties! In fact, the only way this virus can spread from cat to cat is through deep bite wounds (not play biting, actual penetrative wounds), mating (yet another reason to spay/neuter your babies!), or in utero (from mom to babies during pregnancy).
FIV cannot be spread through things like sharing bowls, sharing litter boxes, sneezing, or touching.
So, if you’re interested in adopting one of these amazing FIV+ kitties, don’t let their diagnosis deter you! Denny is considered “special needs” but only as a precaution that she may benefit from a little extra care. Who doesn’t love spoiling their kitty though, regardless of their FIV status!
