Joey has a significant 5/6 heart murmur. A heart murmur is an abnormal whooshing or swishing sound, caused by a disturbance in blood flow, which can be heard when the heart is listened to with a stethoscope. Murmurs have many possible causes, some of which are harmless, but some of which can be signs of significant underlying heart disease. Signs of heart failure can be seen as an increase in breathing rate/effort, coughing, or also having a bloated appearance.

Unfortunately, a diagnosis of this nature at such a young age, does not lend itself to a long life. He may not live to a year of age, though nothing is written in stone and he could live for 2-3 yrs. It is also possible that he could pass away suddenly. Further testing, like an Echo (ultrasound) with a veterinary cardiologist would be required to help determine the cause and course of action.
