LAVERNE & SHIRLEY, BONDED PAIR: “Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!” (with apologies to anyone younger than GenX)
Laverne and Shirley have been best friends most of their lives, as far as we know. They were employed as bottle cappers… er, barn cats… at a nearby brewery… um, farm… and were laid off when their boss sold the property, leaving these two ladies out of a job. The new employer thought they deserved a chance to retire as indoor companion cats, and so do we! They are nice, well-mannered ladies, very quiet, and also very fond of each other. We can’t imagine one leaving the other and we are hoping to find a home for both, so they can spend their remaining years together.
In their first days at the shelter, Shirley was very frightened, while Laverne just took it all in stride. Laverne comforted Shirley, doting on her, draping herself over Shirley like a big tiger-striped security blanket, to make her feel loved and secure. In just a few days they were welcoming petting and brushing from their volunteer friends, and within a couple weeks were starting to screw up the courage to leave their cage and explore the cat room a little. Now we are taking them out of their cages, to encourage them to spread their wings a little more. They’re not anxious or panicked when they are taken out, though they do tiptoe around to find a quiet place to curl up and nap. They are just about the most low-key and nonintrusive cats we’ve known — very quiet and content to go with the flow. They seem to know that the shelter is just a temporary stop in their life journey together, and have decided to bide their time with us and not make any fuss. We have no doubt that two very sweet, interesting personalities will emerge once Laverne and Shirley know they are in a more permanent situation, with more consistency and less chaos.
Though they are very quiet in nature, they don’t seem at all bothered by other cats. It’s possible they had some exposure to dogs in their previous life, though we can’t know for sure that they did. They seem like the kind of cats who will be gentle with children, as long as the children understand that they shouldn’t push the ladies to be more active.
Both ladies are vet-estimated to be 10 years old, though Laverne strikes us as being a little older than Shirley. Their tipped ears are indicative of their being spayed as part of a trap-neuter-release program, one that typically focuses solely on getting cats spayed and neutered and then released to farms as barn cats, and it’s very possible they are sisters, or mother and daughter. They are spayed, box-trained, current on vaccinations, tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia, and have received dewormers and flea treatments.
Adoption fee is $50 for the pair. Personal checks are accepted from R.I. residents only; all others may pay by credit/debit card or money order, payable to “Town of Scituate.” No cash is accepted.
