Mordechai - Domestic Short Hair Cat for Adoption in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Mordechai ACCT-A-265493 is a 4-year-old male who came in as a stray on 10/22. Finder noted that he "appears sickly? He is skinny, and not eating much. He is shy, scared and quiet: showed up at back/side door every morning this week, and ate small amounts. His coat is not groomed well." Mordechai was assessed in shelter to have

flea anemia and a Grade II/VI systolic heart murmur, in addition to the reported anorexia. He is notably muscle wasted as well. Mordechai has been anxious in shelter, but has allowed all handling necessary for his exams, and will allow some pets from staff. He will shy away and give clear body language warnings when his time is up, and seems to prefer to avoid interaction if possible rather than escalate. This poor boy is surely not feeling well, and could you use a little pick-me-up! Could you be the help for mindful Mordechai?

MEDICAL:



Per his exam on 10/22, Mordechai was QAR (quiet, alert and responsive), friendly, but low energy. His Body Condition Score was 2 (Very Thin), and his ears were AU waxy. Live fleas were found, and his teeth were yellow with tartar; red/dry gums. He is muscle wasted, but walking on all 4 limbs.



Per his exam on 10/22, Mordechai is BAR (bright, alert and responsive) with a Muscle Condition Score (MCS) of 2/3. He was mildly dehydrated, with mild dental calculus, and a grade II/VI systolic heart murmur. He has mild muscle wasting along his epaxials. He was reported to have anorexia, and assessed to have flea anemia.



BEHAVIORAL:



Per staff on 10/22:

"I walked into the room and a staff member was petting Mordechai. He was allowing all pets, but started to shy away from head pets. After a few more seconds, he backed away a bit more, and began to lift his front paw. I went to say hello as well, but he was similarly reticent so I decided not to push it. He mostly seemed avoidant & anxious."
