My name is Gideon, and for the longest time, I thought my only job in this world was to be the brave one.
Out by the railroad tracks, fear felt like the ground trembling beneath our paws every time a train thundered past. With everything so cold and sharp around us, I tried my hardest to stand tall for my sister Edith and my brother Percy. I wanted to be their protector, their little shield against a world that didn’t seem to care how small we were. But the truth is, beneath my tough front, I was just a terrified kitten hoping someone would come along and tell me I didn’t have to fight so hard anymore.
Because the world used to be so overwhelming, big open spaces and sudden changes can still make me want to retreat. I really need a slow, gentle introduction into my new home—maybe starting out in just one quiet room where I can learn your scent, listen to your soft voice, and realize that no scary surprises are waiting for me.
Once I understand that this space is truly mine and safe, the guard dog in me completely surrenders to the kitten I never got to be. My armor melts right off. I’ll lean my whole body into your hands, headbutt your knuckles for affection, and look up at you with eyes that say thank you for saving me.
I spent my early days learning how to survive. Now, all I want is someone to teach me how to be cherished. If you have the patience to let me take those first few steps slowly and hang up my shield for good, I’m ready to be your most loyal shadow.
