I came in to RASKC a bit beat up, but I have been seen by a vet and I am on the mend! You can visit me at the Pet Adoption Center on weekdays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Your new pet received a basic physical exam, in addition to routine vaccines, deworming, and topical flea preventative, if indicated. Although your new pet is ready for adoption, there is always a possibility of additional medical conditions that have not been detected or may develop in the future. Current medical conditions are noted below. 1) Suspected ear mites: This cat has symptoms such as itching and discharge (heavy black debris) suggestive of chronic/untreated ear mites. The ears were cleaned out under anesthesia and a topical anti-parasitic treatment called Revolution was applied. It is common for cats to need multiple doses of anti-parasitic treatment as well as ear cleaning despite the treatment above. We recommend following up with your primary veterinarian to establish care and recheck the ears. 2) This cat also has 3 patches of deep skin infection at the base of each ear and on the neck. We suspect this is due to chronic itching of the ears and head area due to untreated ear mites. The skin has been treated with an antibitoic injection that lasts 2 weeks and he has been prescribed an anti-itch oral medication called Apoquel. It is important to follow up with your veterinarian to ensure these lesions are resolving. If it is due to ear mites, they should resolve within 2-4 weeks. If not resolving your veterinarian may discuss other diagnostics tests for other causes such as allergies or autoimmune disease that may require chronic or lifelong management. Additional care and financial responsibility for these conditions is via the adopter. Please follow up with your regular veterinarian.
