Gooseberry - Domestic Short Hair Cat for Adoption in Cumberland, Maine

Gooseberry came to HART with her sister, Firethorn, in May 2026 after being rescued from an abandoned home. Both girls arrived very fearful and undersocialized, unsure of people and of what life at HART had in store for them. Our Shy Angels Socialization Team went to work helping them feel safe, build confidence, and learn that people can be trusted.

While Gooseberry is still wary of people and isn't quite ready to accept pets, the progress she has made has been incredible. And we think a very handsome boy named Yam deserves at least a little of the credit.

When Gooseberry and Firethorn moved into Room 2, it quickly became apparent that these three were in it for the long haul. Gooseberry adores Yam, Yam adores Firethorn, Firethorn adores Gooseberry - and around and around it goes. You'll often find all three curled up together, basking in a sunny window, or simply enjoying the comfort of being near one another.

Gooseberry is especially attached to her Yammy and looks to him for reassurance when she's unsure. And Yam seems more than happy to oblige. He has taken his role as protector of "his girls" very seriously, and their sweet little family has helped all three of them continue to blossom.

Gooseberry still has some work to do when it comes to trusting human touch, but every day she shows us a little more of the cat she can become. She loves to play with toys and will take Churu from your hand. In the right home - one that understands she doesn't need to be rushed and will allow her to grow at her own pace - we truly believe she'll continue to make wonderful progress.

All three love treats, sunny windows, watching the birds and the outside world, and most of all, spending time together. They're looking for a quiet, dog-free home without children, although calm, respectful visiting children would be just fine.

Gooseberry is bonded with her sister Firethorn and their best boy Yam, and the three are looking for a home together.
