Cookie’s story began when he was born into a colony in July 2013. His home at that time was on Kline Avenue, just off South Hanover Street, Pottstown. Cat NAPS TNR’d the colony & took the kittens for socialization & eventual adoption.
It didn’t take long for this cute long-hair orange kitten to get adopted. All was well for about 5 years until the adopter’s home caught on fire. The family & pets moved into a motel for 6 months while the home was being renovated. After the family moved back in, Cookie never felt comfortable there again & resorted to dwelling in the basement. His adopter felt he deserved a better life & returned him to us.
A few months later, December 31, 2018, Cookie was again adopted & lived in Spring City, Chester County. In July 2025, his adopter contacted us saying that he was pooping all over the basement. We urged her to make a vet appointment, gave her some other info & asked to be updated after he saw the vet.
The adopter never contacted us, so we assumed all was good . . . until April 27, 2026 when we were contacted by French Creek Vet who informed us they had a cat there that was microchipped to us. Looking up the microchip, we were stunned to find out this was Cookie. French Creek tried to prepare us for what he looked like, but we were still shocked to see this once gorgeous cat reduced to thick mats & totally emaciated! Somehow Cookie went from Spring City to Mohnton, Berks County. A couple found him wandering around their property. He had apparently been out for some time to be as matted up as he was.
Our first step was to get bloodwork done which revealed why he was pooping diarrhea all over & emaciated. We also found out Cookie weighed a mere 5 pounds! The results of the bloodwork? Cookie is hyperthyroid – a relatively easy fix! Our next step was booking an appointment for him at Bow Wow Bliss groomers. During this grooming, they shaved off as many mats as they could but ultimately had to stop. Cookie was too emaciated over most of his body. There was simply no fat padding to cushion the blade of the trimmers.
We had to wait until Cookie gained weight which took about 4 months. In the meantime, a giant mat gradually worked its way loose. It makes you wonder how many years of neglect it took for poor Cookie to get this matted & emaciated.
Cookie is as sweet as we remember. He is now 13 years old & should be living a retired life as a beloved family companion & not in a shelter environment. Now that we have Cookie on the right track with his meds & food, he is the perfect gentleman in his crate at night & during the day with the other foster cats. HIs meds can be given as transdermal by putting a cream on his skin. We would love to get Cookie adopted. You can email for an Application to Adopt: notallperfectstrays@yahoo.com Approved applicants are welcome to visit Cookie in his foster home. IF YOU EMAIL FOR AN APPLICATION, WE WILL SEND ONE OUT WITHIN 24 HOURS. PLEASE CHECK YOUR SPAM FOLDER IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A RESPONSE IN YOUR INBOX.
