Grady is a sweet, female, Congo African Grey parrot. She enjoys fresh vegetables and fruit along with her pelleted diet. Although timid when she first arrived in her foster home, she has made great progress. She is very affectionate and very much enjoys spending time with her person. She seems to prefer women and is a bit fearful of men.
History: Grady was a cherished companion in her previous home for more than 26 years. After the passing of her favorite person, the family recognized they could not provide the attention she deserves and reached out to PEARL to help find her a loving home. She is believed to be about 31 years old.
About the species: Congo African Grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) are among the most intelligent companion birds, known for their remarkable ability to mimic speech (if they choose to) and form strong bonds with their caregivers. Native to the forests of West and Central Africa, they are recognized by their soft gray feathers, black beak, and bright red tail. African Greys are considered a “dusty” parrot species because they produce a fine powder down used to maintain their feathers—unlike many New World parrots such as Amazons and macaws—so regular cleaning, good air circulation, and HEPA air purifiers are helpful in the home. With proper care, companion African Greys commonly live 40–60 years, making them a long-term commitment. Because of their intelligence and active nature, they thrive with daily interaction, mental enrichment, and proper housing; PEARL requires a cage that is at least 1.5–2 times the bird's wingspan and height to allow adequate space for movement and comfort.
NOTE: Our foster families understand the habitat needs of the PEARL parrots in their care -- which can sometimes be unique. If you are intersted in pursing adoption, please refrain from investing in a cage until complete the Standards of Care class and meet with a PEARL Adoption Councelor.
