Caterpillar is an outgoing and curious rabbits who came to HRS with inner ear infections who is looking for a very special home. Chronic ear infections are common in lop-eared rabbits due to the shape of their ear canals. This anatomy can limit normal airflow and drainage, predisposing them to wax buildup, infection, and abscess formation over time.
The left ear had a severe infection with abscessation that required surgery. A procedure was performed to open and improve the ear canal, allowing for better drainage of ear wax and debris. This surgery helps manage the condition.
The right ear has also shown signs of chronic ear disease but has remained stable with routine ear flushes and cleaning. At this time, surgery has not been performed on the right side, as medical management has been sufficient to control symptoms.
Chronic ear disease in rabbits is typically a lifelong condition. This rabbit will likely require ongoing monitoring and routine ear care, including periodic cleanings and possible medications if infections recur. In some cases, additional procedures or surgery may be needed in the future, particularly if the right ear worsens.
We recommend that this rabbit be examined by a veterinarian experienced with rabbits after adoption to establish a long-term management plan and to monitor both ears.
