They say dogs live in the moment, but if you look into Huey Howard's soulful eyes, you'll see a story of incredible resilience. Huey's journey hasn't been easy, but his spirit remains unbroken.
Huey's life has been defined by storms-both literal and metaphorical.
The First Storm: Six years ago, as a young pup, Huey was given away to a total stranger the night before a major hurricane. He weathered that storm with grace, hoping he'd finally found his "forever."
The Second Storm: After six years of loyalty, life shifted again. His family split up, and Huey found himself unwanted and, heartbreakingly, in an unsafe situation.
Despite being let down by the people he trusted most-and despite never receiving the veterinary care he deserved in his previous home-Huey hasn't let bitterness take root. He is a 9-year-old Golden Doodle who still believes that the best thing in the world is a human's touch.
Huey is a big boy with an even bigger heart. At 84 pounds, he is a "velcro dog" in a jumbo package.
Despite years of medical neglect, we are thrilled to share that Huey is Heartworm Negative! It's a testament to his strength, and our rescue has since made sure he is fully caught up on all required vaccinations.
He is incredibly friendly with humans of all shapes and sizes. If you have a lap, he will try (bravely) to fit in it.
He has a spa day (grooming) scheduled so he'll be arriving at his new home smelling like a dream and looking dapper.
Huey is looking for a peaceful retirement home where the only "storms" are the ones he watches safely from a cozy rug.
No Felines, Please: Huey is a "dog's dog" and a "people's dog," but he's decided that cats are just not his cup of tea.
To keep his senior joints jumping, Huey needs a family committed to a monitored diet. He's currently on joint supplements and needs to shed a few pounds to feel his absolute best.
After a lifetime of uncertainty, Huey needs to know he is finally safe. He needs a home where "forever" actually means forever!

Please note: Information to determine if you might be a match for one of our animals can only be found on our application.
*An inquiry, questions or introduction through Petfinder is NOT an application*
All known details about our animals are posted on their profile and updated daily. Other info will be discussed in detail with the foster during the application review process. Due to the high volume of introductions/questions received we ask you to submit an application (that application can be used for any dog with Take Paws Rescue).
The adoption fee for adult dogs covers age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, spay/neuter if not yet performed, heartworm test & appropriate heartworm treatment by the rescue's vet. All dogs in our care are also kept up-to-date on HW/Flea Prevention.
For more on this, or for additional information, including the adoption process and our adoption fee scale for all our adoptable pets (including an explanation about Benefactor Dogs), please see our FAQs page:

Any breed labels used by Take Paws Rescue, its employees/volunteers, or on vet records provided cannot be guaranteed. Breed labels are given based on information obtained during intake and/or best guesses based on appearance and/or temperament of the dogs and Take Paws Rescue gives no assurance to the accuracy of these labels. Labels are necessary for postings to many animal networking sites, such as our website, Chewy, Pet Finder, and others. These are in no way a guarantee. Additionally, exact age and potential size cannot be guaranteed.
***Take Paws Rescue saves dogs from high-kill shelters across the South, owner surrenders, and discarded dogs with uncertain futures. All of our animals live in foster homes where they are socialized, and well cared for. An application will be required to make sure it's the perfect match!
