McPherson, Mackie to his friends, came to Minnesota Sheltie Rescue when his loving person passed away. Mackie very much enjoyed his life as a therapy dog. This sweet boy is now looking for a comfortable retirement home.
Age: 12 yrs young!
Size: Mackie is approximately 18 inches at the shoulder and weighs approximately 38 to 40 lbs.
Temperament: Mackie is an easy-going, gentle love sponge. He tries very hard to follow the rules, to do what is wanted. His primary life goal seems to be to spend as much time in your lap as you desire. Mackie would like to find someone with a shorter work day or who can come home during lunch to spend time with him.
Fence: Because of Mackie’s deafness, a secure physical fence with direct access from the house would be considered a necessary protection.
Dogs: Mackie gets along fine with the other Shelties here. He shows little inclination to play with them, much preferring the attention and affection of his human. Mackie occasionally carries soft toys and offers to play fetch for a couple of repetitions.
Cats: Unknown - there are no cats in his foster home.
Kids: No kids in his foster home though Mackie likely interacted with children when he was a therapy dog. Mackie would do best in an adult home, or a home with an older child who understands appropriate interactions with an older dog.
Crate Use: Mackie loves his crate and often elects to spend time in the comfy crate that functions as an end table.
Housetrained: Yes
Responds to Cues: Mackie was trained with hand signals. He does respond to some cues, most notably “come”.
Leash Walks: Mackie walks fine on a leash. Shorter leash walks to prevent pain and stiffness would be beneficial.
Car Rides: Mackie rides comfortably in his crate in the car for his safety.
Activity Level: Mackie is a relatively low activity level senior citizen.
Barking: Mackie does a little “what about me?” barking when left alone, but stops quickly.
Health: While in rescue, Mackie has had an exam, bloodwork, thyroid test, tick screen, heartworm test, and dental. While he may appear to have some hearing, he is almost certainly mostly if not completely deaf.
Mackie says that other dogs in the home are optional. A human with a very big lap or chair - and who needs lots and lots of Sheltie love is a must. Someone who can support him through changing needs that normally occur with a senior dog. He can navigate stairs without issue but that could change. Mackie will gift you a lifetime of love in return!
Adoption fee: $250
