Shepherd Dogs Available for Adoption

Please note: After completing the initial phone screening, you’ll be connected with the foster for a video chat meet and greet. Transports run every few weeks, and approved dogs will be placed on the next available transport. If you’re not ready to adopt until a later date, please wait to apply until that time.

We are a volunteer-run rescue, and our team donates time and effort to helping these dogs. If you are not fully committed to moving forward in the adoption process, we kindly ask that you do not apply. If others are involved in the decision-making process, please make sure you’ve discussed the adoption with them and that everyone is on board. We want to ensure we’re using everyone’s time wisely and focusing on finding the right homes for our dogs.

Sweet senior Conway is a 10-year-old, 48-pound, neutered shepherd mix who is looking for a calm and comfortable place to spend his golden years. He was brought to the county shelter in San Antonio late last year and has since shown just how much love and quiet companionship he has to offer.

Conway is currently being fostered in Austin, Texas, and transport out of state can be arranged by the rescue once he is matched with an approved adopter.

Conway is an older gentleman who truly enjoys a slower pace of life. He loves his daily walks and doesn’t let a bit of back-end weakness hold him back—gentle walks actually help him stay feeling strong, and he happily spends that time sniffing and exploring at his own pace. He enjoys being outside, lounging in the sun, and relaxing around the house.

When he’s feeling extra excited, he’ll occasionally play with toys, but he’s happiest when things are low-key and predictable. New people and unfamiliar situations can make him anxious, and he can be vocal at times when he needs something or simply wants to be close to his people.

Conway is crate trained but does not require crating and can be left out unattended without issue. He is also potty trained and has good house manners, making him an easy companion in the home. Because of his age, Conway appreciates having his space and would do best as the only dog or with a single, calm dog who is respectful of boundaries.

A home with older children who understand dog body language and know how to give space would be ideal. Conway can be an anxious guy and is currently on medication to help manage it. Loud or busy environments tend to increase his anxiety, which may show up as panting, whining, or vocalizing, so he will thrive most in a quieter, lower-traffic household. He’s been around cats and generally keeps to himself, showing little to no interest in them.

At home, Conway is easy to please. He loves a comfy bed, a good brushing, and boiled chicken, which truly has his heart. He is friendly with people and other dogs and is simply looking for a peaceful home where he can feel safe, loved, and settled. We know that adopting a senior dog comes with its own considerations, and we are always happy to talk more with serious adopters to help determine if Conway is the right fit. Please note our process starts with an application. If we think you might be a good fit, we will reach out to coordinate a phone interview. This is followed by a video call with the foster home. Virtual home visit, personal and vet reference checks are required to complete the process. Transport is included in our adoption donation.
