Shar Pei

DESCRIPTION

Cashew is an almost 3-year old mixed-breed with features of Sharpei, Hound, and Collie. He is ~40 lb, lanky, and has a ton of energy. He is a loving, goofy, and gentle dog who loves to play with other dogs, walk/run together, and explore the outdoors.
He also has some unique traits: he is on a 100% vegetarian diet and needs daily probiotics/Vitamin B to support his GI tract. He is a smart, fast-learner, who is easily motivated with training treats and knows plenty of tricks- but also resource guards food on occasion. Cashew needs an owner who is willing to support a dog with resource-guarding behaviors and has experience with desensitizing, counter-conditioning and other de-escalation tactics.
Cashew has lived with a cat and likes to play- if living with another cat it should be agile and dog-savvy. He is crate/house-trained, great in the car, and loves to curl up with a warm blanket and fresh chew toy. Cashew enjoys plenty of mental and physical stimulation matched with napping and cuddles.
He does best in an enclosed yard/dogpark or on a short leash when out for walks. He has not been around children much and is sometimes anxious when in their company. He also takes Gabapentin/Trazodone for anxiety when visiting the vet. Although not usually shy, he can sometimes exhibit fatigue from GI symptoms.
Despite having more needs than most, Cashew has so much love to give and will be happy to become your best friend, greeting you with a wiggly butt and stompy feet. We encourage you to share this with other rescues and trainers also. Please do the application at https://www.homewardboundrescue.com/application/dog
