We need to introduce you to two beautiful, slightly confused, very lovable Portuguese water dogs who are currently enrolled in “How to Be a Dog 101.” ❓🐕
Meet Helena (sable) and Rita (black and white) 🐾
Both girls are about 2 years old and weigh around 35 pounds. They came to us as part of a group of 14 dogs surrendered to a vet clinic by someone who had good intentions of breeding but quickly became overwhelmed. We were only able to take two because our kennels are bursting right now. These girls were the lucky ones.
We’ve only had them since Saturday, so everything is still new. The leash. The routine. The idea that humans can be for cuddling and not just caretaking. They are sweet, gentle, and friendly. They just haven’t totally figured out how to “dog” yet.
They love other dogs. Actually, love might be an understatement. They need a furry friend in their forever home. Being alone is their least favorite activity. If there is another dog around, they are happy. If there is not, they will file a formal complaint.
They’ve been cat tested and were more intimidated than interested. They’ve also been around small children and did just fine. No concerns so far other than the fact that they strongly prefer companionship. They do not need to go together. They just need to go to homes where another furry friend is waiting.
They will be fully vetted next Wednesday and available for adoption shortly after. 🎉
Helena and Rita are ready to learn what it means to be someone’s dogs. Let’s find them homes where they never have to feel overwhelmed or alone again. 💛
According to AKC.org:
The Portuguese Water Dog is super-smart and very 'biddable', meaning he's easy to train and eager to please. Portuguese Water Dog's dense, profuse coat is hypoallergenic but requires regular and extensive grooming. Beyond regular weekly grooming, an occasional bath will keep the Portie clean and looking his best.
