DESCRIPTION

Pet Location:
Foster Home – please call 816-986-4426 – I'd love to show off all the cool things I’ve learned at Wayside! Please arrive at the shelter before 4pm on our open adoption days to meet me!

- I am from a puppy mill/hoarding situation. I will likely need extra time to adjust to home life. I have lived with other dogs but have not socialized with people. Things like walking on a leash and going through doorways can be challenging for me. Adopting me will be extremely rewarding, but I need time to learn.
- I am enrolled in Confidence College. This is a program for dogs to build confidence and learn that the world is not so scary. My adoption comes with a free 30-minute private training session.
- During my time at Wayside, I have enjoyed being around other dogs.
- My foster home says I am crate trained and house trained!
- I am eligible for a Slumber Pawty, a 7-10 day in-home trial period. Please visit our website for additional information.

My home needs are:
- I must go to a home that already has another confident dog to help build my confidence.
- A fenced yard is a must for me! I do not know how to walk on a leash, so I need a secure area to go out for potty breaks.
- I need a home with kids 6 years old and older since I tend to be nervous around new people and loud noises.
- If you have kids in the home between 6-9 years old, I will need to meet them since I can be nervous around new people and loud noises.
- New people and things make me a little nervous. Wayside recommends that I have a low traffic home.
- For my safety, I need to go home on an anti-slip collar called a martingale collar. For your convenience, we sell them in our retail store, Whiskers and Wags.
- For my safety, I need to go home with you in a travel crate in the car. You can bring one with you, or we have ones for sale in our retail store, Whiskers and Wags.

Hi there, I’m Hazel! I’m sweet, smart, gentle, and a cuddly lovebug, once I get to know you. I’m shy and timid, too, and everything about life is new and strange to me. I’m still figuring out what it means to just be a dog. Still, I’m resilient and I’m a survivor, so I’m getting there, but these things just take time and patience. I hope maybe you’d like to join me on my journey. You can help me celebrate as I learn and grow and blossom into the dog that I was always meant to be. I’d like to have you by my side. That sounds nice.

I’m a darling, 3 1/2-year-old, 15-pound Miniature Poodle mix, with the cutest little face, soft fur, and an unassuming, delightful personality. I’m already housebroken and crate trained, and I know how to use a potty pad if I can’t get outside in time. Please stay patient and calm with me as I get settled in, which will likely take me several weeks. I came to Wayside after I was rescued from a lonely life as a breeder dog. It felt so good to be safe and cared for, yet terribly confusing and stressful too. Foster Mom saw that I was struggling, so she took me home to teach me about life as a family dog. It has been a process, but I’m coming out of my shell and gaining confidence every day, becoming a silly, playful, happy friend who just wants to feel safe and loved.

My foster parents understand my insecurities, and they never push me into situations that are uncomfortable for me, which has helped to put me at ease. Although I might feel a little anxious when they leave me, I happily stay in the finished basement area when no one is home. My crate is set up with the door open, and I spend most of my time curled up and safe inside, and I peacefully sleep in my crate at night, too. I love having a routine that I can count on. When someone is home, I can roam free in the house, but I sometimes feel startled and afraid of strange noises. I’m learning to approach Foster Mom for comfort during these times, and she helps me relax. She is my favorite, and I will likely bond deeply with just one or two people. Once you’re my people, I’m all in for love and cuddles. For now, I prefer women over men. I follow Foster Mom around the house, curling up next to her for a nap and excitedly wagging my tail whenever I see her. I’ve recently discovered the fun of toys, and my foster family loves to watch me play and act goofy without a care in the world.

I am thriving with a calm environment, positive reinforcement, and plenty of praise and encouragement when I’m a good girl. I look to Foster Mom for validation, which she quickly provides. I’m shy and fearful when new people stop by, so Foster Mom asks them to sit quietly and wait for me to approach, once I’ve had a chance to warm up. I will be happiest in a calm and quiet home without a lot of commotion or activity. I currently live with two dog savvy teenagers. I love and cuddle with the girl, but I’m still a bit unsure of the boy, even though he is kind and gentle with me. I will need a home with kids over the age of at least 6.

While I don’t need a crazy amount of exercise, I love going for long, leisurely walks with Foster Mom several times a day! I get so excited when I see my leash, offering play bows and happy pounces in anticipation. I sit patiently as she puts my leash on, and off we go! It’s fascinating and fun for me to experience the sights and smells of nature that I never knew existed until now. I’m not reactive to other dogs or people along the way, but loud or strange noises may startle and spook me. Due to my size and my past, I will always need to be on a leash or in a securely fenced yard, and I need to be directly supervised whenever I am outside. This is important to help keep me safe. I must have a fenced yard in my new home.

I love the other small dog that I live with in my foster home! He has taught me so much, and I follow his lead. We play together or just hang out. I will need another easygoing, friendly dog to play with and learn from in my new home as well.

A quiet, safe, peaceful home with people I love sounds like heaven to me. I won’t ask for much. I’ve never had a single thing of my own in life, and I will never take the luxuries of a real home for granted. If you’ll give me patience and grace as I get acclimated to my new life, letting me do things in my own way and time, I promise to be such a nice friend. I’m ready for a family of my very own. I’m ready to shine!

Love, Hazel
