Meet Miko, the malti-poo (maltese x poodle mix). Miko came to the Shelter after his previous guardian was moving and unable to continue caring for him. He lived with another dog (a similar sized female, who has since been adopted). He was indoors in his previous home and would use pee pads as well as go potty outside. Miko enjoyed playing with toys and balls in his previous home. He enjoyed going for walks daily for about 5 to 20 minutes. Miko has lived in a home with children previously. Miko’s previous guardian did observe some nervous behavior around strangers (alerting to their arrival, barking and then moving away). We have also seen that behavior at the Shelter. Adopters should be mindful that Miko may not appreciate a high traffic household (with lots of people coming through) and may appreciate come management if strangers come over (such as a separate place where he can relax, away from strangers). Miko has lived with dog friendly cats and did well. Miko enjoys riding in the car. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw! Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them.
