Backstory/Journey
Spice has spent nearly 25% of his life in the shelter after being brought in stray/abandoned. He is such a sweet boy who has persevered despite his hard past. His demeanor is that of a puppy younger than his stated two years as is typical of puppies who find themselves living the shelter life. Despite those obstacles, he possesses a stoicism and intelligence - as if his past has rendered him simply grateful for love and support. In foster, Spice continues working very well on his puppy manners with commands - sit, come, leave-it/no. He makes such a loyal companion; he is an affectionate (touch is his love language!), obedient, funny boy - patiently waiting for his forever home.
Potty Trained/House Broken?...Yes.
Crate Trained?...Sort-of.
Toy and/or Resource Guarding?...No.
Personality & Energy Level
Spice is goofy, playful and very smart. He has high emotional intelligence and a moderate energy level. Belly rubs are his standard and he LOVES to cuddle. He does get a case of the zoomies from time to time. Spice can be slightly fearful/skittish while he acclimates to new environments. He also is alert to sounds in close proximity to the home's front door. Supporting puppy development with enrichment serves Spice well. Spice loves the car, he loves looking out the window and sleeping!
Social Skills: Kids & Dogs
It is unknown if Spice previously lived with children; introductions should be careful/thoughtful. He has shown good demeanor with elementary aged children who had previous dog experience and moved slowly with him while playing catch in the park. Spice is "mouthy" defined as: a natural way for puppies to explore their environment and relieve teething pain. As an Adult dog, this usually stems from a lack of exercise, never learning appropriate play boundaries as a new puppy, and/or excessive stress (i.e. abandonment/shelter life). This is addressed with a consistent environment/routine - daily walks, affection and no-fear training.
With dogs, Spice is reactive particularly in crowded, busy environments. Spice is easily redirected with command of his short leash and verbal commands like "no Spice", let's go" and/or "leave it". We keep distance to ensure plenty of space for him. In foster, he did very well in suburban environments. He walks well on his leash, with zero to mild pulling.
Home Time & Separation
Spice is housebroken and quiet.
Like most puppies, he does best being with his human(s). His separation anxiety manifests as laying at the front door, whimpering & wandering- but with time he grows more trusting in being alone. A puppy cam would allow for check-ins (perhaps one that releases treats!). He has shown no signs of destructive behavior in foster, but he is very smart and knows how to stand to attempt to open doors. We do not know Spice's past challenges, but he is fearful of (and can escape from) pop-up crates. While he continues training on being home alone, puppy proofing is recommended.
He chooses the couch or his crate as a peaceful spot to nap and he sleeps peacefully through the night from his semi-covered crate - he prefers to see out a bit. Gentle bath time was good (doesn't love the dryer but what pup does!). He was also non-reactive to the washer/dryer and vacuum!
Diet, Health, Exercise & Wellness
Spice's diet is currently GI focused. He is treat driven but won't hesitate to spit out something he doesn't like! He loves water (& really appreciates his water bottle on hot days)! Spice loves going on walks however he is being assessed for a healing hind leg(s) so walks (after he goes potty) are limited to 10-15 minutes and stairs avoided - current information can be discussed with his ACC team.

My Ideal Home
Spice would do best in an active, adult-only home that can give him plenty of exercise, structure, and companionship. He prefers not to be alone for long and thrives when he has his people nearby.
Good with Other Pets?
Spice's interactions with other dogs have been mixed and can be a bit overwhelming for him. He would do best with slow, structured introductions or as the only pet while he continues to build confidence.
Good with Kids?
No children under 13, as Spice can become overexcited and benefits from an adult-only home.
Things to Know
Spice is a high-energy, affectionate dog who loves attention and will happily jump in for pets, playtime, or even a cuddle in your lap. He can get a little overexcited at times and will benefit from continued training to build calm behaviors and impulse control. He prefers company and may struggle when left alone for long periods, so enrichment, routine, and companionship are key.
