Mixed Breed Dogs Available for Adoption

SCAR

Mixed Breed
🇺🇸
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
February 12th
male, large, adult

DESCRIPTION

Scar is a sweet and playful pup who needs a patient and understanding adopter to help him feel secure. While he's nervous in the shelter environment, he warms up beautifully with time and kindness. Once comfortable, Scar becomes affectionate and cuddly, even hopping into laps kisses and leaning in for pets.

Scar enjoys walks and exploring new sights and smells. He also loves playtime and can get the zoomies. He's shown us he enjoys meeting other dogs and has had positive play interactions.

Scar will thrive in a home that can guide him through training and help him build confidence at his own pace.

Eligible for rescue and adoption. Visit Scar at ACCT Philly daily, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Behavior Notes:

Per volunteer 12/29: Today I took Scar for a walk and then we did a dog meet with Crispy Paw. Scar pulled some on the walk so I used a harness method which helped. He enjoyed all the different sights and smells on the walk. I offered him some treats but he wasn't interested. See his video for how he is on the leash. On our walk back to the shelter, we saw Crispy Paw and did a meet in the parking lot. Scar was very interested in meeting another dog and after greeting each other, the two started playing. See the video of the good dog meet.

Per volunteer 12/28/24: He's a good boy! Hes quite fearful in the shelter environment. He does not love exiting the shelter while all the dogs are barking at him. After about 10mins of hanging out in the yard, he relaxed a ton and got lots of zoomies and was very playful! He is going to need a patient owner who is willing to work with training as when he starts playing it can get a bit intense. He means well and just seems to get overstimulated. Very handsome!!

Per staff 12/27/24:
KENNEL PRESENTATION:
Scar was growling at the handler with a tucked tail and whale eyes. She closed the guillotine and he got frightening and began to hard bark. He continued to growl, but ate some treats the handler tossed in. The handler tossed in the leash and he sniffed it but he backed away and huffed and growled. The handler spent some time giving him more treats and was able to leash him, although he continued to growl. He came out once secured and stopped growling.

LEASH SKILLS:
Pulls moderately

HANDLING:
Scar was nervous in the room with us at first. He sniffed both handlers but gave a lot of whale eye and shied away. We gave him some space and time to relax, and he sniffed around the room curiously. He flinched hard away from initial touch, but then began to rub his body against his main handler and was very affectionate. He hopped into her lap, leaning in and trying to give face kisses. He flinched from me at first, but then allowed me to give him lots of head pets. He allowed all handling when we went slow, and was very cuddly and affectionate after he had some time to warm up. He wasn't super interested in treats, and was a little picky about what he liked. Overall, Scar needs a little time to warm up, but he's just a nervous puppy that needs to be shown that it's okay before he trusts.

PLAY:
Did not attempt

TOYS:
Very playful with toys, perked up at a squeaky toy. Got jumpy for a toy and likes to smack with his paws, but wasn't overbearing.

Per staff 12/27/24: hard barking, low growling and whale eyes

Per owner 12/26/24: He is like if you don't give him attention he be on top of you. You give him attention when he is bored he starts bitten stuff. Lived with adults, children, cat. High energy

ABOUT: MIXED BREED DOG BREED

The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
