DOGGERTON

Mixed Breed
🇺🇸
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
February 12th
male, large, adult

DESCRIPTION

**$100 in pledges to any rescue that may pull!**

Doggerton ACCT-A-241738 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Doggerton must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by Tuesday, February 17th, 2026 at 10AM. Should Doggerton's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change.

Doggerton is a large, adult male with a calm, gentle presence and a heart that clearly wants connection. In the kennel, he presents with soft eyes and relaxed body language, and he's consistently easy to leash and handle. On walks, Doggerton enjoys exploring and may zig-zag a bit, but he's responsive to leash guidance. A no-pull harness is recommended to help set him up for success.

Socially, Doggerton is friendly and affectionate with people. He loves pets, takes treats gently, knows "sit," and has done well with multiple handlers-even during medical procedures where he remained calm and happily enjoyed peanut butter. Volunteers describe him as cuddly, easygoing, and a low-energy boy who enjoys calm companionship.

With other dogs, Doggerton does best with low-key, neutral companions. He communicates appropriately if another dog is too excited and has successfully participated in calm walk-alongs and neutral sniffing interactions. Thoughtful introductions and structured interactions work best.

Medically, Doggerton has a chronic right-sided facial nerve paralysis, which is being managed with treatment and monitoring. He has also been managing a mild shelter-acquired respiratory infection. Despite these considerations, Doggerton remains bright, friendly, and resilient, and he is ready to find a loving home.

Doggerton would thrive in a calm, supportive home where he can enjoy gentle walks, plenty of pets, and the company of patient humans and compatible canine friends. He's a sweet, steady companion looking for the right person or family to share his heart with.

Behavior Notes:
Per staff 2/11/26: Kennel Presentation: laying down, soft and neutral body language. Easy to leash
Leash Skills: strong, tail down moving fluidly, floppy ears. Zig zagging
Sociability:
Friendly and social- was out for a dog meat so we're interested in the other dog than the handlers.
Play: did not do
Dog Interaction: met heaven. Sniffed each other, neutral body language, walked together
Return to Kennel: easy
Color Level: leveling down from blue to exp gold
Recommendations and considerations: no pull harness to reduce pulling

Per staff 2/10/26: Brought Doggerton out to meet Duncan. Greetings at the fence quickly developed into mutual growls and hard barks, and we pulled away. Attempted a walkalong. While not being distracted by being asked to sit for treats, Doggerton stayed focused on Duncan, straining at the leash. Most eye contact / face-to-face interactions resulted in more low growls / barking from Doggerton. After several minutes of walking along, both dogs were able to stand/sit still by their handlers within 5-10 feet of each other without reactivity. Duncan was allowed to come up and sniff Doggerton while he was focused on sitting for a treat, and Doggerton turned to sniff Duncan's groin with mid-level wags, which Duncan allowed. Doggerton eventually appeared to stiffen and seemed inclined to resume hard barking/growling, so we separated. Duncan went back to kennel, and Doggerton sat for some more treats and accepted lots of pets. No issues returning to kennel.

Per volunteer 2/7/26: He greeted me with a calm body, and I very easily leashed him on the first try. He pulls a bit while walking, however is in tune with his handler leash pressure. Out in the play yard he loved to run around and there was another dog who was pacing in the yard next to us so he just kept running back-and-forth mirroring that dog. Seems that he doesn't have the best mobility and was slipping a bit on the snow. He loves to take pets all over from me and had very loose body language while doing so. Did well at the photoshoot with a bunch of new handlers. He took pets all over! Low energy boy

Per staff 1/29/26: Dog meet with waffles: waffles was loose wiggly and ready to play. She came on a little strong and Doggerton gave an appropriate correction open mouth grumble growl at her. She continued to play bow and paw at him. Pulled towards him even tho he walked away. He did try to sniff her but she turned wiggly and in his face which he gave another correction. It would be good to try him with a more low key dog who they could just buddy walk together.

Per staff 1/29/26:
Kennel Presentation: At the front of the kennel when I approached, he has soft eyes with ears to the side.
Leash Skills: Easy to leash. Pulled mildly through the kennels. Did pull harder when he wanted to go somewhere or saw something in the distance.
Sociability: allowed all petting. Takes treats nicely and knows sit. Brought him to the exam room to get bloodwork done, we used minimal restraint and he ate PB off a stick while the blood draw was happening.
Play: n/a
Dog Interaction: Almost ran into another dog going back inside he was easy to redirect and keep going back to his kennel.
Return to Kennel: Went right back in without issue.
Color Level: Blue

Per walksheet: Doggerton was taken for a walk on January 23rd. During the walk, he was noted to have a low energy level. No behavioral issues were reported in the kennel, on the leash, or regarding shyness, mouthiness, or jumpiness. His handler noted that Doggerton exhibited "no barks in kennel," was "super easy on leash," and "loved to explore".

Per finder 1/22/26: He was "cool" around strangers and overall friendly, cuddly, and scared

Medical Notes:
2/6/26: Recheck for facial nerve paralysis shows no improvement in facial asymmetry at this time. Addition of steroids is not recommended due to the dog's complicated upper respiratory infection and suspected pneumonia. Plan is to continue clindamycin and enrofloxacin as prescribed and recheck in 7-10 days if the dog remains in care.

1/28/26: Neutered, overweight male evaluated for facial and ear concerns. Exam findings include chronic right-sided facial nerve paralysis with facial muscle atrophy, decreased sensation, and asymmetry of ear position. Right eye shows a sluggish palpebral reflex and decreased palpebral fissure, while the left eye is normal. The right ear canal is erythematous with the tympanic membrane not visualized; left ear is normal. Oral exam shows pink mucous membranes with moderate dental calculus and staining. Heart, lungs, skin, and lymph nodes are within normal limits; abdomen tense and difficult to palpate.
Assessment favors chronic right-sided facial nerve paralysis, with differentials including otitis media/interna, idiopathic causes, or hypothyroidism. In-house T4 is normal (1.1 g/dL), making hypothyroidism less likely. Plan includes clindamycin 450 mg PO BID, recheck in 7 days, and consideration of adding steroids. Advanced imaging (CT/MRI) may be needed to further evaluate middle/inner ear disease. Dog status changed to rescue only with urgent promotion for expedited exit.

1/28/26: Negative for canine pneumovirus

1/27/26: This dog has been observed to have shelter acquired upper respiratory infection (URI), or a "doggy cold". They have been started on medication, and will be monitored for resolution of the respiratory infection.

1/22/26: Adult intact male (estimated 4-5 years old), weighing 101.3 lbs with a BCS of 6 (stout). Microchipped and wearing a collar; chip has been entered and placed on hold. Notable findings include pressure sores on both elbows and a rash on the inside of the left back leg. Eyes are watery, ears are waxy bilaterally, and there is clear nasal discharge. Skin shows dander but is otherwise clean. Dental exam reveals yellow staining and tartar, with moist, red gums. No musculoskeletal lameness observed. Behavior noted as BAR (bright, alert, and responsive) and friendly.

ABOUT: MIXED BREED DOG BREED

The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
