Meet Otis!
Otis is the definition of resilience with a heart of gold! He was brought into Hitchcock Road Animal Services in Salinas by someone as "found" with four other dogs who we suspect were his littermates. Of the five dogs brought in, Otis was the only one who did not actively try to bite the shelter staff and AFRP was more than happy to step in and bring him into our rescue program.
When we first met Otis, he was a matted, stinky mess, and full of fleas. But lucky for this guy, his foster mom is a professional dog groomer and she gave him an immediate glow up! The transformation was amazing and you could tell that Otis appreciated feeling and smelling better.
We believe that Otis was used for breeding and was not socialized well when he was younger, so he is a little shy when he first meets new people. But he does warm up quickly and once he does, he loves snuggling. Due to his lack of socialization, though, many things are new to him - he didn't even know how to eat out of a bowl when he first arrived at his foster home. He is still a work in progress when it comes to potty training (he most likely was raised in a pen with other dogs), leash walking, and how to play with toys.
He is very much enjoying life in a foster home, though, and is showing some signs of separation anxiety when left alone for too long - even in a crate, he gets panicked when alone for more than 30 minutes (so far). He would thrive in a home where he is not left alone for too long of a period, where he can get a lot of attention, and a healthy mix of playtime and snuggle sessions. Adults or families who understand that he may need a little time to warm up-and are happy to meet him with kindness and encouragement-will get a loyal, joyful companion in return.
