Emma is a gentle and sweet dog who was found as a stray with a huge mass on her neck as well as oral masses in her mouth. She was severely emaciated and critically ill.
She spent almost 2 weeks hospitalized but was finally discharged having multiple surgeries; masses, spay and dental. Over $10,000 was spent getting her healthy again.
Her masses came back as benign and Emma is gaining weight quickly and she's just a really happy and healthy dog with no future medical concerns. She did arrive into care with horrific ear infections and we are still working through that with once per month medication that Mattie's Place will continue to cover costs for until they are cleared completely.
Emma currently weighs 60 pounds (likely 70 pounds is her ideal weight), as of her last vet appointment, February 27th. She has a given date of birth: 2/05/20. I would say she's likely 3-6 years old, but we really have no idea.
Emma will do best in a home with a secured backyard as she loves to romp and play and an equal sized or larger canine companion to play with would be amazing! She is in foster care with a cat and she's super respectful of the cat.
An experienced mastiff or larger breed adopter would be best for Emma as she still navigates the world and figures life out around her.
Emma does escape her crate when left alone in the home so we've stopped crating her in foster care and she does well. But someone home most often would be best for her, at least for the next few months until she can establish a real pattern and connection to her home and people.
Emma would benefit from professional training to set her up for success. Not for anything specific, but just to get some structure under her and help her on a solid path forward post adoption.
FROM THE FOSTER:
Emma is an easy-going, sweet, and affectionate girl who truly blossoms once she feels safe and comfortable. She can be shy when meeting new people - especially men - and may feel unsure if approached head-on. However, if you approach her gently from the side or allow her to come to you at her own pace, she warms up beautifully and forms deep, loyal bonds.
Emma is highly food-motivated (and admittedly a bit of a counter-surfer if something smells delicious!). She currently enjoys 5 cups of Royal Canin Digestive Care dry food daily, along with one can of Hill’s Prescription Diet i/d Chicken & Vegetable Stew, divided into 4 meals.
While she hasn’t shown much interest in toys yet - possibly because she didn’t have them in her previous life -Emma absolutely loves playing with other dogs. She has fantastic energy during playtime and enjoys chase, hide-and-seek, and backyard wrestling sessions. She is also very gentle and respectful with cats, even those with a bit of sass!
At home, Emma is quiet and relaxed. She may startle at certain objects like measuring tapes or boxes, but handles everyday household life well (she’s even fine with a low-volume vacuum). She does get excited about squirrels on walks and will pull toward them, though she stays quiet about it.
Emma adores cozy spaces - especially donut-shaped or rectangular beds with baffles. While she’d happily snuggle in bed with her humans, she sleeps well in her crate beside the bed when encouraged with a little kibble. She’s a sound sleeper who snores softly and occasionally wiggles around in her dreams.
Emma enjoys car rides and is well-behaved in the backseat, though she may “chat” with adorable little grunts and the occasional whine.
She does alert bark at outside noises, but responds well when asked to stop.
She is fully housetrained and has had no accidents in foster care. Emma can relax in her crate with soothing music while her people are home, but she can be quite the escape artist when left alone and shows signs of mild separation anxiety.
She thrives on companionship and will do best with a family who can provide reassurance, structure, and lots of love.
Emma will make an incredibly devoted, gentle, and loving companion for the lucky family who welcomes her home.
