Sugar Bear is a tiny senior gentleman with a huge heart and a very important mission: to become someone's favorite lap warmer!
When Sugar first arrived in foster care, he was understandably overwhelmed and completely shut down. He wouldn't eat or drink for two days and wanted nothing more than to stay glued to his foster. But what a difference a little time and security have made! Sugar is now eating well, exploring the house, greeting people with a happy wag, and showing everyone what a sweet little companion he can be.
Sugar is a calm, affectionate boy who loves being close to his people. He'll happily come over for pets, enjoys a morning belly rub, and sleeps with his foster. He's especially active in the morning, when he enjoys his daily walk and strolls beautifully on leash. Afterward, he's perfectly happy to settle in for a long, cozy nap.
He's also doing wonderfully with new people now that he's feeling more comfortable. Sugar greets strangers with a wagging tail and is even comfortable being picked up. He's a little independent in his own way, but he definitely likes knowing where his person is. If you disappear somewhere he can't follow, he'll let you know with a bark until you're back in sight.
Sugar isn't much of a toy guy, preferring companionship and exploring to playtime. He does, however, enjoy keeping tabs on the resident cats. He's fascinated enough to follow them over the baby gate and occasionally needs his foster to rescue him when he forgets how to get back. Naturally, he waits until his person notices and then politely requests a lift with a bark. Senior dogs know how to delegate!
Sugar is 100% potty-pad trained and is learning the ins and outs of going potty outside. After just a week, he's already about 50/50, so he's making progress as he adjusts to a new routine after previously living entirely indoors.
Sugar Bear is looking for someone who appreciates the quieter joys of life and has plenty of time to spend getting cozy. He doesn't need a marathon runner or an adventure junkie-he needs a warm lap, a soft place to nap, a gentle morning walk, and someone who will appreciate having a tiny shadow nearby.
If you're looking for a sweet senior companion who will happily curl up beside you and make your home feel a little warmer, Sugar Bear is ready to be your perfect little lap warmer.

Adopting a senior dog is like getting a vintage car - it comes with character, a few extra quirks, and might need a bit more maintenance. Expect occasional tune ups at the vet for oil changes (aka meds), and embrace the fact that those 'normal lumps and bumps' are just part of the well-earned charm package! Ruff Start will share all known health information with adopters and recommendations to keep your Senior dog in top shape.
