We were headed to the Lancaster shelter to rescue another dog when Shadow caught our volunteers' eye. Shadow wasn't just another overlooked black dog at the shelter, he was brought into the shelter by the only family he ever knew. Not only did they discard Shadow without hesitation, but it was also clear he led a life of neglect.
Shadow was given the highest possible behavior score on intake, they noted he was very sweet and easily handled. Shadow had alopacia all over his body and was very underweight. His body composition was 4.5/9. They started him on medication to try to help resolve whatever was wrong with his skin. Additionally, they saw to it that Shadow received extra feedings every day.
Shadow was brought in on January 12th. Two weeks later, they took him into play groups to see how he interacted with other dogs and staff. They noted he was very easily collared in his kennel and walked nicely to the play yard. He entered the yard very relaxed with a soft body and initially bypassed all the other dogs to just go explore the yard. He was very tolerant of all the other dogs trailing and sniffing him. After a short time exploring, he began approaching the other dogs and exchanging soft greetings with them. He remained calm and social during his entire time in the yard, but he did not engage in any play. He is very dog social.
We were able to pick Shadow up on February 3rd where he went to a boarding facility to continue his path to his second chance. We are continuing to monitor his dietary needs and treating his skin issues. Shadow is once again being called out as a very sweet and loving boy. Dogs show us time and time again just how resilient they are.
