Meet Huey - A Gentle Giant possessing a Very Soft Heart
Huey is a big marshmallow disguised as a 3 year old Great Dane — sweet, sensitive, loving, and unintentionally funny. This poor boy spent months on the run before finally finding safety with NWFLGDR, and while those days are behind him, he’s still learning that he no longer has to live life like he’s in an action movie.
Huey will need an understanding, patient family to help rebuild his confidence in “scary” situations. Garbage trucks? Absolutely not. They make him quiver and search for cover like they personally wronged him. Walks under the big blue sky are still overwhelming, and outdoor adventures currently involve locating the nearest hiding spot just in case the world gets too loud.
Because of this, Huey will REQUIRE a well-rounded, confident canine companion in his new home — someone who can show him the ropes, demonstrate that life is actually pretty great, and help him feel brave. Huey gains confidence by watching other dogs, and a calm, world-savvy friend will be essential to his success.
At home, Huey is pure gold. He knows how to use a dog door and does so appropriately for his doggie duties…though he does enjoy carrying his toys outside to gently bury them in a carefully curated cocoon of dirt (yes, bury — artistic choices were made). Foster mom strongly suspects Huey and his foster sister, Kealey, are actively plotting to repaint the inside of the house using dirt from the outside.
Huey loves to play, even though he looks awkward doing it. His play style is endearing, clumsy, and guaranteed to make you laugh — think long legs, unsure coordination, and a lot of “wait, is this how I'm supposed to do this?” energy. He’s joyful, goofy, and tries his very best.
Huey doesn’t have an aggressive bone in his body. He’s wonderful with other dogs of all sizes and firmly believes that all cats should want to be his friend too (results may vary).
Huey loves people deeply and seeks affection in the most gentle, unassuming ways — even if he’s unsure of you at first, his heart always wins - if you have hands to give him lovins he will be there. Treats won't reel him in - love will.
Food is optional. His people are not….Huey will leave his food bowl mid-meal just to make sure you didn’t disappear. In fact, he’s convinced the bathroom is a magical portal that swallows humans whole, and he will check on you repeatedly to ensure you survived the toilet vortex.
Huey is still learning that he doesn’t need to run, hide, or watch his back anymore. He has free roam of the house and yard at all times BUT, foster mom closes the dog door when she leaves just in case something scary happens while she is gone. Huey knows how to sit - we are working on stay. He kennels easily without too much vocal drama. Huey's leash skills need work, and until his confidence grows, he should be considered a flight risk. With time, consistency, and fun, positive adventures (and his canine role model), Huey will continue to blossom.
