Meet Velma. This young momma dog and her three puppies were found abandoned on Kelly Mountain in Logan County, WV, discovered by a group of hunters far from any homes. When the hunters stopped, the dogs immediately approached them, friendly and social, leading us to believe Velma likely once had a home and that she and her puppies were intentionally left behind.
Thankfully, a Good Samaritan stepped in and took the little family into her home until rescue help could be found. Because of her compassion and quick action, Velma and her pups are now safe and have settled into their local foster homes.
Velma has proven to be a sweet, affectionate pup who is great with other dogs and gentle with toddlers, and she has been fostered with both. She’s now living as an only dog with her foster mom, Norie, soaking up all the attention. Velma recently visited the vet to get up to date on vaccinations and diagnostics and was given a clean bill of health as a young, healthy adolescent pup.
Norie shared this update:
“The vet visit went well. Velma rides well in the car and was great with the staff—a very good patient. She’s friendly with everyone we’ve met and really enjoys other dogs. She’s housetrained and hasn’t had a single accident in my house. She sleeps peacefully in a crate next to my bed at night. She’s OK on leash but needs more practice—she can get excited and a bit jumpy when she wants to meet another dog. Once she meets them, she does well, though not all dogs want to engage.
Velma has some spunk and loves to play and chase balls, but she also knows how to settle down inside.I taught her sit in one day, so she’s very smart. She loves cuddling on the couch. Very affectionate. Can’t get enough of going outside and loves to go for walks."
This sweet, gentle, and more submissive girl will make a wonderful family dog or new pack member. She’s still a young pup who needs to learn her basic commands and fine-tune her leash skills, but her social skills and house manners are already excellent.
