Introducing one of our newest fosters, Maple. Maple is a sweet, shy little girl. She is ready for her forever home, and promises to love you forever.
In early December, Chihuahua Rescue & Transport received an emergency call for help from a Good Samaritan trying to find a safe place for a neighbor’s Chihuahua. She was living in the backyard with no shelter from rain or frigid temps, and she was confined in a small wire kennel. The owners were unwilling to bring the Chihuahua inside. They informed the neighbor that they would be leaving the country by the end of this week and had no plan for their dogs other than to leave them behind. They told her if she could find a place for this Chihuahua, they would happily surrender her. Urgently, the neighbor reached out to us, “They’re freezing. They won’t make it if someone doesn’t come now.” CRT quickly stepped up and brought this girl into our program. We have named her Maple and she is a sweet girl.
Maple gets along with other small dogs in her foster home. She enjoys running and playing with them. Maple is also great at respecting boundaries, so if her sibling Chihuahua does not want to play, she will quickly back off. Maple enjoys toys – especially the large plush ones. She also likes nyla bones. We believe Maple may have been a Mommy Chihuahua because sometimes she will take the smaller plush toys into her bed and cuddle with them. This is heart-breaking and heart-melting at the same time. But it definitely shows us her tender side.
Maple has a shy and laid back personality, so we expect that she will be shy when she meets her new family. Once she feels safe and warms up, she wants to be your buddy. Maple loves climbing up on her Foster Parents laps and spending hours of “family time” as they watch TV together. She also daily belly rubs and love. If you are laying down for an afternoon nap, she sneaks up on the bed and cuddles against you! So we know she loves cuddles! When we first got Maple, she sat about 3 feet away from her foster parents and observed. It was as if she was shocked that she was able to come into the house and have her own warm bed. She did not want to do anything to jeopardize this new life! Our hearts have been so happy to see her adjust and begin to believe!
As Maple continues to grow up, she will gain confidence. We have seen a tremendous growth in confidence in the weeks we have had her. She has a super sweet personality. Sometimes if you get out of sight, she will quietly “talk” as if to say, “where are you”. Her tail is constantly wagging and she is so happy to be around you. She runs to the door to greet you when you come home from shopping. She loves to follow you around the house to see what you are working on. Whatever it is, she wants to be a part of it. Because she is shy and a little cautious, we would love to find a patient, experienced forever family for her. But oh this young girl is a charmer and really melts our hearts.
Our vet estimates that Maple is about 2 years old. She currently weighs 9.9 pounds, and is completely grown. Maple is primarily tan with white highlights. She has cute ears, beautiful eyes and a cute face.
Maple has done well with her potty training. She will potty indoor potty pads and rarely has an accident. We are also working with her to learn to potty outside. At night, Maple enjoys sleeping on the couch in her foster home. Note she will go into a crate, but she feels uncomfortable if she is in there for long periods of time. We think that is because she remembers being in that small backyard crate 24/7, and that obviously was not a healthy situation for her. We have recently begun to train Maple on a harness and leash. She was uncomfortable and unsure at first, but is beginning to settle in now.
Maple is super smart, is athletic and believes gravity is optional — she is a climber! So no chain link fences are going to be in her future. Maple loves to explore! She will get up on furniture so she can watch from the highest point of the house. She can navigate baby gates. We are working with her so she can learn polite indoor habits. Her new family may want to be on the outlook for Olympic-level climbing attempts (she is getting better!).
The ideal home for Maple would be one with moderate energy. She would love to have another young dog (maybe 1-3 years) to play with. We believe she would also do well as an only dog as long as her family was around to pay a lot of attention to her. Maple needs a family who can check on her every 4-6 hours (would not be a good fit for a family that works 10-12 hour days). She is fairly quiet. Loud noises do startle her and she will scamper off to safety (this is likely a response to having to live outside and fighting for survival). There are no children in his foster home, but she is a friendly little girl. Due to her shy nature, we recommend a home with older, mature children (10 and older).
