Meet Winston!
Winston is a 5-year-old Chihuahua with a gentle heart, a resilient spirit, and an incredible love for other dogs. He came to Pug Pals Rescue as a transfer from a shelter in Fort Worth, Texas, so he could have a better chance at finding the forever home he deserves, and we're so glad he's here.
When Winston first arrived, he was very underweight and in need of extra care. With good nutrition, medical support, and lots of love, he has gained weight beautifully and now looks healthy and strong. Even more impressively, Winston has successfully completed heartworm treatment and is now heartworm-free!
About Winston's Special Needs
Winston has cerebellar ataxia, a neurological condition that affects balance and coordination. This means his movements can be a little wobbly or unsteady at times. You may notice a head bob, a wider stance, or a playful, tipsy walk. The important thing to know is that cerebellar ataxia is not painful, not progressive, and does not impact his happiness or lifespan. Winston doesn't know he's any different, and it doesn't slow him down from enjoying life.
Winston adores other dogs and would truly thrive in a home with canine companions. He's happiest when he's snuggled up next to another dog, laying on top of them, or simply being part of a pack. His foster home reports that he constantly seeks out his foster siblings for comfort and companionship.
Winston does like to bark at and chase cats, though he does not appear aggressive. That said, most cats would likely find him annoying, so a cat-free home (or one with very dog-savvy/unbothered cats) would be ideal.
Winston in a Home
Sweet, affectionate, and gentle
Thrives with other dogs
Resilient and adaptable
Healthy, heartworm-free, and gaining confidence
Needs a home that appreciates a dog who may wobble, but loves deeply
Winston is a wonderful reminder that being a little different doesn't make a dog any less perfect. He's ready to bring warmth, companionship, and lots of cuddles into the right home, especially one with another dog to lean on.
If you're looking for a kind, dog-loving companion and have room in your heart (and on your couch) for a very special Chihuahua, Winston may be the perfect fit.
