Pete is a 4 year old Brittany neutered male. Pete is a complicated guy. He has issues (don’t
we all), but he is kind, gentle and affectionate toward people. When Pete came to NBRAN, he was blind from being born with cataracts. NBRAN raised the funds so he could have cataract surgery and now he can see. But restoring his sight was the easy part.
After his eye surgery, Pete had some anxiety. He had two repetitive compulsive behaviors of
spinning and barking, and now that he could see, he also fixated on light and shadows. It took
some trial and error, but these behaviors are now all well managed with medication, white
noise, and coping skills he’s been taught. Whew! The only repetitive behavior he has now is
fetching. He loves to retrieve a ball and can go until he’s worn himself and the launcher out.
But there’s more. Pete has Pica, it is a compulsive disorder where a dog eats nonfood items.
The vet and others have recommended putting a muzzle on him when he goes outside. But while Pete is outside he is far too busy joyfully retrieving a ball instead of eating sticks and acorns. Instead, he eats things he shouldn’t when he is inside. So Pete is trained to wear a muzzle while he is unsupervised in the house. He's good about wearing his muzzle and doesn't seem to mind it. It's an important safety measure so he doesn't swallow things he shouldn't. He is fine in a barren crate -no blankets or pads. But the best part about Pete is that he is loving and affectionate. He has no compulsion to eat anything while he is sitting in your lap, leaning into your shoulder or enjoying a good belly rub.
With all this going on, Pete MUST BE the ONLY dog in the home. He doesn’t like dogs, really, he does not like other dogs. And why should he? He has few pleasures in life, why does he need to share? He is so kind to people and he has the softest touch. If you have room in your heart, consider giving Pete a chance. He will be a great companion for a retired family or with older children. A secure fenced yard would be ideal for him to be able to explore and to safely fetch that ball his new family will enjoy playing with him. His foster Mom loves Pete, and despite his challenges, so will you.
In addition, Pete is a great leash walker and has perfect recall. He's neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. Other than requiring eye drops once a day, he is in good health.
He loves to ride in the car and watch the world go by while looking out the window. Pete is eager to please and will do anything his foster mom asks of him. He's a happy dog and when he's tired, he loves to sit and cuddle in his foster mom's lap.
Pete will need to take eye drops once a day for the rest of his life, When his foster Mom tells him "Chin," he rests his head in her hand so she can put the drops in his eyes.
My adoption Fee is $400 to help offset my medical expenses and to allow NBRAN to rescue other Brittanys. NBRAN will provide transportation, up to 1400 miles, to my new approved home.
