Border Collie and Hound Dogs Available for Adoption in New York, New York

Meet Atticus — a 5.5-month-old, 38 lb (as of 5/2) Border Collie/Hound mix who somehow managed to combine “sweetest dog ever” with “surprisingly well-behaved puppy” into one adorable package.

Seriously, Atticus is the kind of puppy that makes you wonder if he secretly attended manners school before arriving in foster care.

This handsome boy is incredibly affectionate and believes that physical contact is the highest form of communication. If you sit down, prepare for him to gently lean into you, curl up beside you, or lovingly cover you in kisses. His love language is absolutely cuddling, and honestly, he would happily spend all day soaking up affection if you let him.

Atticus also has a playful side—he enjoys plush toys, tennis balls, little games of fetch, and outdoor adventures. He loves walks and is already AMAZING on a leash, especially for a puppy. He naturally walks right beside you without pulling and is more interested in sniffing the world and enjoying the stroll than causing chaos.

At home, he’s surprisingly relaxed for his age. He’ll happily play for a bit and then settle down to lounge nearby like a little couch potato. He’s quiet, doesn’t bark, and even does great in his crate without whining—basically apartment gold.

Like any puppy, Atticus is still learning. He’s not fully house trained yet, but he’s doing incredibly well and picking it up quickly with routine and consistency. He already understands “come,” seems to know “go potty,” and has proven to be very smart and eager to learn. His only real “puppy moment” is occasionally chewing on furniture, but he responds well to redirection and corrections.

Atticus can sometimes be startled by loud city noises or unfamiliar environments at first, but he adjusts quickly and becomes more confident every day. Underneath it all, he’s just a gentle, loving boy trying to figure out the world.

He’s wonderful with people, friendly with dogs, loves kids, and has the kind of calm, affectionate personality that makes everyone fall for him instantly.
