Meet Hail -
Breed: Black Lab Mix
Age: Estimated 7.5 years
Weight: 40ish pounds
Hail wakes up in the morning with pep in his step and a constant wag in his tail. Not a lot is known about Hail's history before he entered his foster home except that he has always gotten along well with other dogs, had a fear of people, and has scars on his head. He came into his foster home as a dog that didn't seem familiar with living in a home environment. He was medicated initially just to cope with his shyness and fear of the unknown. That was then, three months later he no longer needs medication to tackle the day, and he loves life. Everything excites Hail from getting up in the morning, going out to potty, riding in the car, mealtimes, and those special occasions he comes into the kitchen to muzzle punch someone asking for a snack. He also loves bones and will steal all the bones and hide them in his crate when the other dogs aren't looking.
He has made a huge transition since entering his foster home. He has overcome so many of his fears but is still a work in progress. Hail needs someone that will take things slow as he acclimates to his new environment. One of the his newest accomplishments is that he was a bit hesitant of being petted while he is walking around, BUT he's now accepting pets! He loves lounging on the couch and you sitting beside him and petting him. He will follow people around the house constantly and is very affectionate, frequently touching his people with his nose and paws, but at this point it mostly has to be on his terms.
He would do most anything for a snack, and progress could be made faster if food were involved. As a shy dog that was afraid of people, he doesn't resemble the dog that came into his foster home but does need a family that is open and willing to show him compassion and help him learn to trust.
Hail no longer uses his medication for daily living, but medication is used if he needs nail trims or bathing. It would also be necessary if he were to take a trip to the vet.
Hail is versatile and would do well whether there are other dogs in his home or he was the only one. He currently resides with two male dogs, and he is the more submissive of the three. He would most likely be able to coexist with cats as he lives on a property with other small animals and mostly ignores them. He met sheep for the first time the other day and it excited him, but as he is redirected and gets used to them a wide range of animals are not a problem.
He would do best in a home with older children (older teens) that have been taught to respect a dog's space. Hail will flee for an area he deems safe if he is overwhelmed and a crate or a bed in a room out of the main area serves this purpose. He is a very smart young man and obeys basic commands and will go into his crate if told to do so.
Hail is a young guy with so much potential and so much love to give. He is in need of the right family to join and assist him on his journey to building trust and
confidence.
