Let the good times roll! Meet Ella Mae Momma Skates, a 1.5-year-old Black Lab mix, weighing approx. 62 pounds (as of 4/12/26). At just a year-and-a-half, this beautiful black lab has already lived a lot of life. A pregnant southern stray, she found her way north with Great Dog and gave birth to twelve puppies (the SKATES litter) while in foster care! Patient, devoted, and endlessly loving, Ella Mae has done an absolutely incredible job taking care of her dozen, but now this sweet momma is looking to live a life of rest and relaxation with you!

Ella Mae has the kind of soulful, expressive eyes that make you feel like she understands every word you say. And honestly, she just might, so don't talk about her behind her back unless it's good things! Incredibly intelligent and eager to learn, she’s deeply connected to her people and thrives on that bond. Every time you come home, she’ll greet you with her signature “hugs,” leaning her whole heart (and body!) into you in the sweetest way. She knows you're doing your best to bring home the bacon. And she means that literally!

This beauty loves kids and wants to be as close to them as possible. In fact, she might literally get on top of them. That's a whole lot of loving! Her size and strength make her a better fit for a home with older children who can appreciate her affectionate, full-body love. No matter how bad you smell, she'll still give you big hugs! What a gal! She walks beautifully on leash, gets along great with other dogs, and carries herself with the calm confidence of a dog who’s seen a lot but never stopped loving. She loves to be with people, so she will bark and pace some when first leaving her, but once she remembers you'll be back again later, she lays in her Igloo and chills until your return.

After giving so much, she deserves a home where she can finally rest, be cherished, and feel safe and adored every single day. She's not fully house-trained yet, but she hopes to learn as she adjusts to your home. She will also go into her kennel by herself. Just tell her to kennel.

It is most likely that both their parents were strays and even if not, mixes of some sort and that their grandparents were mixes as well. The dog may have some genetic material of an American Staffordshire Terrier (pit bull). The dogs are usually mixes of many breeds, making them a breed all their own - a True and adorable American MUTT. If you are interested in this dog, you must submit an application. Great Dog is not a shelter so there is no building you can visit. Our dogs live in private foster homes until adopted.
