Petal is one of the shyer Alaqua Beagles, but has become much more outgoing since her arrival. She enjoys attention from people, especially when allowed to approach on her own terms. She loves exploring her surroundings and is naturally curious.
She will occasionally try to hide her food or treats. While this behavior is natural for dogs, it's worth monitoring interactions with other animals, as it could develop into resource guarding. Continuing to encourage positive, low-stress experiences around food can help prevent this behavior from escalating.
Petal is from the Ridglan Farms breeding and test facility. These Beagles are generally affectionate, resilient, and eager to experience the joys of life beyond the laboratory. At the same time, they have unique needs. Many are naturally skittish and easily frightened, making them significant flight risks. They also possess the curiosity, determination, and remarkable sense of smell that have been bred into Beagles for more than 500 years. Once a Beagle catches an interesting scent, following it is instinct, not disobedience.
Because of this, there are a few extra steps to the adoption process. Veterinary records are reviewed, applicants are asked to complete a questionnaire and watch a Zoom session that includes frank discussions and realistic expectations
