Meet Gemma!
Gemma is a 1.5-year-old, 26-pound Beagle/Hound mix with the sweetest little face and a heart that’s still learning how to trust. Gemma’s life began under incredibly harsh circumstances. She was rescued alongside over 20 other dogs from a hoarding situation on a drug addict's property, where she spent her first year of life in survival mode. Having to fight for food and shelter with absolutely no positive human interaction, the world taught Gemma to be wary of people. Because of this background, she is a "project dog" in need of a quiet, compassionate home that understands the deep patience required to help a survivor feel safe.

Gemma is a true "dog's dog" who finds her confidence and sense of security through the presence of other canines. When she is around her furry companions, her personality begins to emerge; she looks to them for cues on how to act and finds immense comfort in the safety of a pack. For this reason, Gemma requires a home with at least one other confident, friendly dog to help her navigate her new life.

While she is initially very shy and reserved with humans, Gemma has a gentle spirit that is well worth the wait. Gemma will eventually form a bond with people once she is given enough time and consistent kindness. She is compatible with cats and children who can respect her boundaries and give her the space she needs to approach them on her own terms. Gemma isn't looking for a home that expects an instant companion, but rather a family willing to walk beside her on her journey toward trust.

Gemma is spayed, up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccinations, and microchipped.

HFG Dog Rescue is a 100 percent foster-based rescue located in Berkeley Heights, NJ with a sister location, The Almost Home Wellness Center, in Aiken, SC. All of our dogs are rescued from kill shelters in SC + GA and once ready for adoption live in loving local NJ foster homes until they find forever families of their own. Our fosters begin basic training, housebreaking, and leash-walking skills to help pair you with the perfect pup for life!
