Chestnut - Basset Hound and Dutch Shepherd Dog for Adoption in Golden, Colorado

Meet Chestnut!

Chestnut is a handsome 3-year-old Basset Hound/Dutch Shepherd mix weighing about 40 pounds, and this sweet boy is ready to find a family of his very own!

Chestnut was rescued from the euthanasia list at the Hesperia Animal Shelter in California, giving him the second chance he so deserved. Now he's ready to leave his past behind and start his next chapter in a loving home.

Chestnut is incredibly sweet with everyone he meets. He can be a little shy when first getting to know someone, but give him some patience and time to feel comfortable and you'll quickly see his gentle, affectionate personality come through. Once he knows you're a friend, he's an absolute sweetheart.

He's friendly with other dogs when given proper introductions and would likely enjoy having a canine companion who respects his pace while everyone gets acquainted. Chestnut hasn't been introduced to cats yet, but if his future household includes feline siblings, we can introduce him to cats to help determine whether they may be a good match.

Chestnut would benefit from continued leash training, so his future family should be prepared to spend some time helping him build those skills. With patience, consistency, positive reinforcement, and plenty of encouragement, we think this smart boy will continue to gain confidence and learn what's expected of him.

Because Chestnut can initially be shy, we recommend a home with kids ages 8 and older who can be patient with him and give him the space and time he needs to settle in.

Chestnut's adoption fee is $295 and includes his neuter, vaccinations, and microchip.

If you're looking for a sweet, gentle companion and are willing to give him a little patience while he learns that he's finally home, Chestnut may be your guy.

The Basset Hound is a unique and recognizable breed known for its long body, droopy ears, and soulful eyes. Originating from France, they were originally bred for hunting small game like rabbits due to their keen sense of smell and sturdy build. Despite their laid back and affectionate nature, Basset Hounds are also persistent and independent thinkers, which can make training a bit challenging. With their low energy levels and love for lounging, they make wonderful companion dogs for families seeking a loyal and easygoing pet.

The Dutch Shepherd is a versatile and intelligent dog breed that excels in various roles, such as herding, guarding, and agility competitions. Known for their loyalty and high energy, Dutch Shepherds are highly trainable and make excellent companions for active families. With their distinctive brindle coat and alert expression, these medium sized dogs are valued for their work ethic and loving nature. They require mental and physical stimulation to thrive, making them a great choice for experienced dog owners looking for an engaging and devoted pet.
