The ears must be acknowledged first, they truly deserve their own spotlight… truly. One up, one out, they operate independently of each other. Basically, these ears have separate plans for the day, and it is so stinkin’ charming. Add in that perfectly patterned brindle coat, a head tilt that feels straight out of a cartoon, and a happy, wiggly presence that’s impossible not to smile at… this is Pretzel 🥨 A big, lovable boy with amazing features and the sweetest heart.
Go watch Pretzel on YouTube, then come back to read more about this wiggly, wonderful boy who is going to make someone so happy and proud. https://youtu.be/9676mWeO-iY
Pretzel is estimated to be around 3–4 years old and weighs about 72 lbs. He appears to be a bully mix, but as always with rescue, breed and age are our best guess. What we do know for sure? Underneath all that size is a dog who is still very much a puppy at heart. He’s eager, smart, responsive, and wants to do the right thing.
Let’s talk about his personality, because this is where Pretzel really shines. He is incredibly people-oriented and adoring. He checks in with his handler often, leans into you for connection, and clearly looks to his person for guidance. There’s a soft sweetness to him that makes you all Team Pretzel immediately. He’s not stubborn or defiant… he’s learning. And when you show him what you want, especially with a treat in hand, he is all in and a master in no time.
The best way to think of Pretzel currently is “puppy in a big body”. He gets so excited when offered affection and he can occasionally jump up and get a bit mouthy. There is no part of him that is trying to hurt you, he is being as gentle and playful as possible, but it is something that will benefit from structure, redirection, and consistency. He already knows how to sit, and with a little follow-through, that skill will become a great tool to help him settle and make good choices. He’s very food motivated, which is going to make training both effective and fun.
On leash, Pretzel is strong and enthusiastic, especially when meeting new dogs. He will pull and needs a confident handler who can guide him and help him stay focused. The good news? Once corrected, he checks in nicely and is able to walk more calmly. With a little work, he is going to build on those leash skills, surely becoming you awesome walking companion.
With other dogs, Pretzel is again, a big ol’ puppy still learning the social ropes. He is excited to meet new dogs and can easily coexist with other dogs but he doesnt quite understand boundaries yet and can be a bit pushy on occasion. He understands clear corrections and guidance, both from people and well-balanced dogs. Because of this, he would do best with a medium-energy dog who can tolerate his learning curve and help show him appropriate play. He’s not looking to stir up trouble… he is still learning how to read the room.
Pretzel has also shown some promising signs with cats, approaching with curiosity and then disengaging. He met our house cat and was a perfect gentleman. If you are interested and have cat(s) we are happy to set up a Kitty Committee Sleepover to get a more thorough understanding.
If you are falling but recognize this is a dog who will need some continued guidance with manners, here’s the thing… this is a dog who wants to learn. The effort you put into him will come back tenfold in loyalty, connection, and growth. He comes pre-programed with heart, he will make you laugh, keep you on your toes, and then one day you’ll realize… he’s got it! And you got to be the one who helped him get there.
If you’re looking for a dog you can bond with, grow with, and absolutely have a little fun training along the way… Pretzel is ready and waiting to get started!
