DESCRIPTION
07/02/26 17:39 Meet Dozer, a young to middle aged male intact dog (31 lb) who is ready for a committed adopter or rescue. Dozer arrived to a local emergency clinic weak, emaciated, deyhydrated and received a blood transfusion. Since then, at the shelter, he has continued to gain weight. He remains mildly anemic (mildly low blood cell count), but it is much improved from where he started. We suspect the anemia was due to severe fleas and parasites, though other causes have not entirely been rule out. His anemia should be closely monitored until his blood counts normalize - an adopter or rescue should be prepared to seek veterinary care for follow-up blood testing (complete blood count, or minimally a packed-cell-volume). Other than his anemia, he has hyperkeratosis at his paw pads, which is a common breed-related issue where the rough skin at the paw pads overgrows - it does not cause him pain and is largely cosmetic. He had ingrown nails and sores from that, but those have healed up. He is mildly itchy but does not have any signs of secondary skin or ear infections at this time. He may benefit from medicated baths routinely (at least once monthly) and may need veterinary care long-term to monitor his skin health given his breed. He will need regular, high-quality routine flea prevention once-a-month long term. Dozer did very well for medical handling, allowing vaccination, blood draws, touching ears/paws without escalation of fear, anxiety or stress. He's also been low stress in kennel.
ABOUT: AMERICAN BULLDOG DOG BREED
The American Bulldog is a powerful and athletic breed known for its strong build and confident demeanor. They are loyal, courageous, and make excellent family companions due to their affectionate nature. With proper training and socialization, American Bulldogs can thrive in various environments, from active outdoor lifestyles to relaxed indoor settings. Their distinctive appearance and protective instincts make them prized as both working dogs and beloved pets for those who appreciate their bold yet gentle temperament.
The mixed breed dogs, often referred to as mutts, are a diverse and unique group with a blend of different characteristics from various purebred dog breeds. These dogs come from a mixture of lineages, resulting in a wide range of sizes, coat types, and temperaments. While each mixed breed dog is distinct in its own right, they are known for their resilience, adaptability, and often have fewer health issues compared to purebred dogs due to their genetic diversity. Mixed breed dogs make wonderful companions for families looking for a loyal and one-of-a-kind pet.
