Domestic Short Hair Cats Available for Adoption

PJ was rescued in the Bronx in July 2025 at 3 months of age. In some ways he was a natural born house cat (he loves a life of leisure), but in other ways he took time to adapt. He had to slowly learn the joy of petting and having a human playmate. We’ve observed that he is slower to adapt to a new environment than other cats, and he’ll need patience as he settles in.

If we were giving out superlatives, PJ would be “Most Incorrigible.” PJ needs a lot of toys and stimulation. He uses the running wheel and loves spending time bird watching in the window, on a hammock, or in a catio. If left unstimulated, he takes it out on other pets in hard play. PJ is affectionate on his own terms, but if you let him tell you when he's ready, he'll seek plenty of love. He comes up to his human and asks for pets frequently. He loves cheek and head rubs. He can be picked up easily once he knows you, and has recently let his foster start trimming his nails as if he's an old pro. If he’s overstimulated, though, give him some space. He is a good couch companion and loves watching animal programs. At night he prefers to sleep by himself.

PJ has the cutest squeaky meow and can be chatty when wants something or is very engaged in play. He enjoys purr pop sticks. Note, he doesn't eat purr pops themselves but he loves the sticks that are left. He carries them in his mouth like it’s a cigarette. He flips it up in the air and catches it, he loves to hide it and act surprised when he finds them under the carpet or bedding.

PJ's one eye was badly infected when he was rescued and its now slightly closed due to his 3rd eyelid not opening fully. He doesn’t have vision in that eye, but he’s totally healthy and the eye isn’t a medical concern.

PJ would be a perfect companion for someone who has a catio or at least lots of windows with good bird/animal views, and works from home. He would like to be your supervisor and check on your frequently. He is always up to something, he needs a human who will make sure he gets the attention and stimulation he needs. We recommend a cat-experienced adult-only household.

PJ needs to be an only cat. PJ plays rough and doesn’t take the hint when they signal him to stop. He has not met dogs, but we think he could be OK with a large cat-tolerant dog that is used to cats with big personalities. If he’s going to have a companion, it should be one that is big enough to handle rough play from a smaller animal. With human strangers, he’ll keep his distance, but he’s curious and keeps an eye on them.
