Golden is laying curled up on top of his den, eyes wide and pupils dilated, resting his head on his front paws as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened, he begins to quietly meow, slow blinking repeatedly at the assessor. When petting is attempted, he allows some petting on the head before pulling his head back, leaning away and backing into the corner to avoid contact. Crunchy treats are slowly placed next to him and after some soft talking he gets up to begin eating them. He is able to be coaxed to the front slowly by placing treats at the front of the kennel. Golden hesitates for a few minutes before coming halfway down from the den to eat the treats. When the assessor attempted petting again, he freezes, running back to the top of the den, continuing to lean away, raising a paw and backing himself into the corner. Interaction is ended to reduce stress.
Golden tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home.
