Hi, my name is Barley! I'm a RED pawprint, which means I need an experienced home that meets some specific criteria. Here is what would work best for me in my new home:
-Personality: Affectionate, under-socialized, easily overstimulated
-Can Live with Cats: No, came in with plentiful fighting wounds, likely to fight badly with resident cats
-Can Live with Dogs: Unknown history, may be ok with slow and supervised introductions
-Can Live with Kids: Kids teenaged+ and cat experience only please
-Needs Indoor Only Home: Yes, likely to fight with other cats. Needs to be inside only!
-History of Litter Box Issues: One instance in shelter-clearly relating to unwanted touch. Otherwise has used litter every time. Ask staff for details
-Energy Level: Medium
-Bite History: No
-Needs Medical Procedure Before Going Home: Yes, a neuter and microchip
Barley is a sweet cat who is still learning about interacting with people, and the splendor of indoor living. He came in to the shelter with obvious scratch and bite wounds and was initially very defensive of his space. After receiving his daily helping of treats and cat food, he has quickly changed his tune. While increasingly affectionate, he still gets overstimulated very suddenly. It is important he goes to a cat-experienced home where he can be the only cat. He shows his discomfort with subtle body language changes, and reading these ques will help everyone stay safe and happy. In time, he is likely to become an even more loving and snuggly friend (if sassy at times)!
If you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application on our website (www.whatcomhumane.org/adopt) or in person at our facility. We recommend calling into the shelter after your application has been submitted so our front desk can give you next steps on our adoption process.
