Shumardii came into Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. This poor guy had a serious issue with his eyes and his fur was a mess. Despite how uncomfortable Shumardii was, he still had a head bonk and a happy purr for everyone he met.
When shelter staff reached out to us about Shumardii, we knew we had to help.
We got Shumardii out of the shelter and took him straight to the vet. Turns out Shumardii has entropion – a condition where in which the eyelids roll inward, causing fur to rub against the surface of the eye. It can cause serious vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. Shumardii hung out at his foster home for a bit on medication before he had surgery. The entropion was repaired and he was neutered. He wasn’t happy about having to wear a cone afterwards, but had to wear it to keep him from doing any damage to his eyes before they have a chance to heal. And heal they did! Shumardii is doing great and is now available for adoption!

Here’s a note from Shumardii’s foster family:
“Shumardii arrived into our house as a sad little kitty lump. He was in so much pain, wasn’t eating and just wanted cuddles and pets. We got him into the vet straight away and he was put on drops and pain meds until his appointment for entropion surgery and his neuter. It’s been just about 3 weeks since his surgery and he is a totally different cat. Shumardii has really come into his personality- and it’s very much main character.

Shurmardii is approximately one and a half years old and he is all kitten playfulness and chaos. He’s a big boy who is starting to bulk out into his adult figure- and he’s going to be big!

He is extremely playful and everything is his toys- scrunchies? His. Plants? His, Feet under blankets? His. He will play and play all day with periodic breaks. He is often found wandering the house with a toy in his mouth waiting for us to throw toys for him to chase.
Shumardii plays hard and cuddles hard. He loves getting his chin and neck scratched and loves being brushes. He is quite happy making biscuits while being brushed.
Shumardii also loves watching the world go by outside of his window in his hammock. He is very interested in the outdoors, so some deterrence from outside doors will be necessary.

Shumardii would do fine with a cat with his energy level and age (with slow introductions). He is currently being fostered with a lab mix dog and is fairly comfortable with him – but Shurmardii is definitely the one in charge.
